Installing winows 10 on a new PC

    G'day guys,

Our old PC died spectacular (power supply and motherboard dead) and we're building a new PC from scratch (well my mate who knows about computers is).
My question is how to I get Windows 10 on the the new PC (I downloaded it free on our old PC)

    Thanks for any help.

    All kinds

Sorry but you will have to buy W10 if you are changing platforms (computers). If you have W7 Retail license than you could upgrade from it.

It's a free upgrade from a qualifying OS. Not free, free. As mentioned, if you have a retail version of 7 or Windows 8/8.1, (not currently in use) that key can be used to install and activate Windows 10.

Install the hard drive from the old computer into the new computer and boot from it. Windows 10 will come up, but not be activated. Run showkey plus from this forum:
    Showkey - Windows 10 Forums

If showkey plus shows a retail Windows 7/8/8.1 product key that was from the previous OS installed (which would have been from the old computer), then go to settings, updates & security, and the activation tab and change the product key to the retail product key that was given for Windows 7/8/8.1. Do this before July 29th and it should activate Windows 10 for free.

If showkey plus shows an OEM product key for Windows 7/8/8.1 that the upgrade came from, then you must purchase the Windows 10 license from the Microsoft store, or a product key from a retail source.

You'll probably want to make sure your friend is aware that the cutoff date for the free upgrade is July 29th. If the PC isn't done by then, you'll have to buy Windows 10 if you want to run that on your computer.
