I didn't mean to be curt in my previous post. I gave the quick (Clean install following the tutorial) and the professional options (BSOD thread is where the members who read dumps are).

The Clean install might give Ramoats a piece of information or a step that was not taken.

I'd venture that it's Norton, but my focus isn't very good. I'm working a few other threads have are really sapping my attention, so I passed the buck.

Easy test, uninstall Norton, run MS defender - BSODs?

Any help is appreciated. .. the original upgrade was a clean install... followed by problems shortly after Norton went in.. that prompted my repair install after SFC couldn't fix the bad files.. Fast boot is off ... no exceptions in device manager.... Uninstalling Norton is my next move.. it seems to always be on boot when the machine is cold.. but it is intermittent. . Norton is coming off tomorrow morning. .

This morning, it booted normally..... I reinstalled NIS using the Norton uninstall/reinstall tool.... That went fine.... system rebooted fine ... checked for updates in NIS and it downloaded 79mb of data... one was a patch.. I applied the patch, it installed then caused the system to hang at the end of the installation when it said it was restarting the product... this was followed a few minutes later by a blue screen and auto reboot..... After rebooting, it was ok for a few minutes, then a blue screen reboot. Upon re entering Windows, I uninstalled the Norton product, cleaned out the temp files and ran SFC scannow ... No integrity violations were found ... So I will use it for a day or two and see what happens .... Anyone have an issue with Windows Defender for the time being??

UPDATE... After the above operations... I am now getting spontaneous BSOD... it even BSOD right in the middle of a repair reinstall. .. I am goibg to try anothe clean install using the recomended guide...

Make sure you get a fresh ISO
After the clean install, take it slow on installing other pgms.

Leave Norton off until you're fairly certain there isn't another cause of the BSOD.
Defender is fine while you test the new install - even after - it's all I use.

As you install your favorite pgms, run through your normal routine (as much as you can without some pgms )

If you do BSOD, then I reiterate - get the folks over on the BSOD thread to read the dump and pinpoint the cause.

One more thing... Windows needs access to the Internet to activate... but it will also immediately begin installing it's version of video and sound drivers.. what should I do about that ?

Leave the computer physically disconnected from the internet. Turn off driver updating:
Device Driver Automatic Installation - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Then connect the computer to the internet.

I have Device Driver Automatic Installation turned off, yet Windows still gives me driver updates.
Following the tutorial to related tutorials I found this:
Driver Updates in Windows Update - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

I haven't tried it yet though.

Edit: I'm inclined to let Windows install all drivers and then manually find drivers only for devices that are flagged in Device Manager

I need to report back and outline how this has been going .. I did NOT do another clean install ... I decided to try and find the causes... So after the last repair install, I ran into some strange circumstances .... first off, I ran SFC and even after a repair install, found and fixed some issues... it has not found any issues since .. then, even though I had disabled fast boot, Windows re-enabled it .. so I took care of that... I was suspicious that windows had interfered with the video drivers, so I rebooted into safe mode, ran Nvidea driver cleaner, booted into standard mode with internet disconnected(even though I fixed Windows to not update hardware drivers) and installed the current Nvidea 64 bit drivers. That said, the system stabilized to a much better state. I still had an occasional BSOD that prompted me to rescan with my copy of driver easy. It reported it had updated drivers for my Logitech keyboard and mouse. I went to device manger, for about the 10th time and THIS time, there were exclamation marks on those 2 devices where there had been none before. I let Drivereasy do it's thing... that was about 2 weeks ago. Knock on wood, I have had no BSOD's since..... stability seems good... it's quick and totally functional. I had some issues with Windows Defender insisting on updating, even though it was turned off .. found a way to disable it completely in policy manager. Norton Internet Security has been fine since reinstalling .... That's about it... I'll report back if I can think of anything else that might help others ...
