    Windows 10

    Hello Bknapp614,

    Welcome to the community!!

Windows 10 is the feature rich OS and stores old Windows files in it after completing the upgradation process. To get your old files back, just go to C drive and look for Windows.old folder. I believe you will find your files there. If you don’t find your previous files there, then I would likw to suggest you to download free data recovery software to recover your lost files. Thanks!!

    Win_8.1-Pro, Win_10.1607-Pro, Mint_17.3

Show hidden files (explorer options - view tab) might help

The upgrade process requires a running OS, so I doubt that he initially performed a Clean install (wiping the drive) - that would require some technical skills.

    see post# 3 and post# 10

A very real concern, I can relate! Because folder/file recovery using usb or dvd Puppy Linux or WinPE boot with attached external HD -- consider finding a local computer guru who can walk you through the necessary steps, or do them for you, and perhaps you can recover the folders/files.
