Upgrading from win 7 (which has issues) to win 10

Hey guys, so somehow my windows 7 PC doesn't really work anymore, it keeps on crashing after a minute or two with the dreaded exception message (I suspect one of the automated system updates didn't install properly). I can login into the safe mode with networking and I have been able to use it.

I was thinking of upgrading to windows 10, however; it seems that I cannot upgrade while I am logged in safe mode. and my PC doesn't work if I am not in safe mode. What's the option for me?

It's a Dell PC, so I can do a factory restore, but it also means wiping out everything installed along with the data. What are the options? How do I upgrade?

I would suggest that you fix the problem first before you even consider upgrading to Win 10.

Please go to Sevenforums and ask the experts to solve your problem.
Make sure you give precise full error message. Not just "dreaded exception message".

Davidhk has given you good advice: Upgrading your problems will only bring your products to a new operating system.

But if your situation is hopeless, there are tutorials on how to do a clean install of Win 10 that will not bring your problems with it.

I agree. Even if Windows 7 was working properly, some upgrades can cause issues. I wouldn't feel comfortable with a system that's unstable and then building on top of that.

If it was me, I'd back up my data (should be done regardless of which option), then wipe the system clean with the restore disc, putting 7 back on. Once that is complete, I'd upgrade to 10 to get the digital entitlement, then wipe the drive clean again for a clean install of Windows 10. It's a few hours of work, but it will leave you with the best possible system.

ok I think I will just do a factory restore. It's such a pain to re-install all the software that I have! but given that I have not been able to use my PC, maybe that's the best option.

I am thinking of partitioning my drives (right now there's just C:). Once I do the win 7 restore, should I partition before I upgrade to windows 10? or after?

Regardless of In-place Upgrade Install or Clean Install, you still need to install the Windows 10 over your Windows 7.

You cannot keep Win 7 in one partition, and install Win 10 in another partition, if that was in your mind.

As far as I know, gatherosstate.exe will run in safe mode in Windows 7.

hey NavyLCDR, that seems to be pretty easy. If I can run that from safe mode, then why not? I will buy an external HD today, and then backup my data, and should be off to the races!

After upgrading my old eMachine from Win 7 to 10 Home Premium all went well on my PC but my wife's exact same PC all goes well until it gets to installing the files and hangs at 10%. Yes, both PCs have a graphic chip that is not supposed to be supported, but I installed the correct driver updates on both. My PC upgraded okay, but now the other hags at 10% and will not go any further. I can just kick it off and it reboots to Win-7 and runs like nothing has been done. Maybe when M$ ever get their act together all the people having problem with their flimsy upgrade will have either died, changed to MAC or just given up on PCs.

I have upgraded an old eMAchine, a newer Dell laptop without much trouble, but this one just sites at 10% and that is all folks!!!! Anyone have suggestions?

Dusty, upgrading to 10 with an unsupported graphics chip might not have been a great idea. But try this:

Find your video card in Device manager, and then work your way to the Events tab. Check the events to make sure that your driver installed completely. An unusual event when it doesn't, but it happened to me.
