Preparing for a Future Free Upgrade

100 days from today, the free upgrade off ends.

If I were to install a free copy of 10 onto a thumb drive (or DVD), and then buy a used 7 or 8 laptop after the free upgrade offer expires, could I install 10 for free from the thumb drive?

No. Well, actually, yes you will be able to upgrade to / install Windows 10 for free. But you will have to pay to activate it.

Like he said, you could install windows 10 with that thumb drive, or upgrade a PC to Windows 10 with it. But do it after the free offer expires and it won't get a digital entitlement issued to it, and won't activate for free. There is nothing special about the install media. The activation servers handle the free upgrade aspect. Once the free upgrade offer expires they go back to business as usual.

Thank you, Both of you. I thought it was too good to be true. A reputable computer shop owner told me that, and I had wondered why it isn't being spread all over the tech forums if true.
