    Windows 10 install questions

OK, i have a question or two. Im upgrading to Windows 10 from win 7 home premium 64 bit. What folders does Windows.old have in it? and how much total ideal space should I have for a Windows 10 install? Thanks for any and all help.

Hello WhizKid229 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

As for the Windows.old folder you will still find the exact same three folders from a previous Windows install being packed away in that being the Program Files, Program Files(x86) on the 64bit Windows only, and users folders. Those have remained consistent since Vista there and still see the same folder names. Other then system folders like the ProgramData and Perflogs folders every other existing folder you may have on the C will remain untouched as a general rule.

Unless you are concerned about the possible loss of some programs you might consider this being Windows three versions later about first seeing a clean install of 10 rather then running into a buggy upgrade situation which happens all too often when problems from one version get passed along to the newer or something simply doesn't go on as it should and problems are either immediate or start creeping in later!

For either route you decide to go with you will want to review the guides here at 10F first and take notice of the adviseries as well since that can save you a lot of headaches! The first however is how you can actually avoid the need to upgrade to 10 first just to see 10 activated and go for a clean install instead. The next since you are asking about upgrading from 7 to 10 is seen at Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums

Now regardless of the route you take to see 10 go the cautions about any extra storage drive you may can be seen in the guide for seeing a clean install. Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums

And for an more advanced set up you might even consider a dual boot of 10 with 7 still on in order to take notes on the new version in the event you still decide to stay with 7 or simply want to keep 7 going as is the case here where I ended up buying a Black Friday special at Newegg for a 10 dvd. Some laptops were found not able to boot up live from flash drives mandating that optical media be used. Windows 10 - Dual Boot with Windows 7 or Windows 8 - Windows 10 Forums

Surprisingly while still having the 64bit 7 Ultimate running on the now second now longer host/boot drive I find myself spending 99% of my time in 10 running the Windows Insider Preview developer type builds on both desktops here as well as the Home and Pro VMs(Virtual Machines) taking notes on each build.
