How should I buy Windows 7 Pro 64?

Hey! Might be building a new game machine for myself and was wondering what the cheapest way would be to get the Windows 10 Pro 64bit free upgrade? Like where should I buy? Can you just buy an Activation Key somewhere for Windows 7 Pro 64 and install the upgrade and enter the key? Or would I have to install Windows 7 and do an upgrade from there?

    -Thanks!

It's been my understanding the Product Key or installed version of Win7 has to include Service Pack 1 or it has to be Win8.1 to qualify for the free Upgrade to Win10. What is installed determines which version will install, Win7 Home Premium to Win10 Home or Win7 Pro or Ultimate to Win10 Pro, Win8.1 Home to Win10 Home or Win8.1 Pro to Win10 Pro. I've not had the occasion to install Win10 using the Product Key, always have been the free Upgrades, now on about 23 installs.

I am in Canada. So, I can only quote you the Canadian prices.

    I can buy a Win 7 Pro SP1 64-bit for $179.99 from Newegg.ca

I can buy Windows 10 Pro from Microsoft Store for $199.99
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/...ctID.319935900

The difference is only $20. I would buy Win 10 Pro and save the hassles of upgrading from Win 7 to Win 10.

OK. Looks like I can save $60 If I do the free upgrade in the USA... I think that is what I'll end up doing. THANKS!

You can clean install 10 pro and use 7 pro key to activate.

No need to install 7 pro and zillions of updates.

Don't forget that if you purchase the OEM version it's not transferable to a new computer once you install it.

and Windows 10 purchased from the Windows store is a digital entitlement, so it is not transferable to a new computer either.

No. It only has to be Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 to get the Windows 10 upgrade via Windows Update. Windows 7 without SP1 and Windows 8.0 can be upgraded for free to Windows 10 by downloading the ISO file with Windows Media Creation Tool or from Microsoft Tech Bench (or MSDN).

Incorrect! 7 has to see SP1 installed! The initial free upgrade to 10 simply requires the service pack be present! I run a dual boot of the October 2009 purchase of 7 with SP1 integrated into the 7 media as well as seeing that arrive shortly after the initial updates following a clean install like the new 7 Ultimate VM created on the main. The second build with 10 Pro and 7 Pro dual booted there will be seeing a new Hyper-X 7 Pro VM soon. Each VM should then see the free upgrade to 10 without hassle.

As for Newegg I bought a 10 OEM dvd set on Black Friday seeing a $20 discount on the Pro edition. That will see a clean install of 10 directly or you can buy a key like someone here reported for only $40 following a clean install from the MC tool media created. The regular price for download from the MS store or elsewhere being a bit higher!

And for wanting to game on 7 but still see 10 you also have the option to see a dual boot setup on a new build. Personally having two OS drives each seeing a stand alone install on two separate drives and then going with the latest version of the EasyBCD program to see the boot entries in both versions for the other with one set as the default OS can work out quite well. The EasyBCD program is free from the neosmart site. EasyBCD - NeoSmart Technologies
