Use bootable USB to upgrade to 1511

Exactly the same issues, exactly the same steps tried, and exactly the same results. WIn10 Pro 64bit. And I dont have 3 days of my evenings to spend reinstalling Win10, then gathering and reinstalling and setting up (the really time consuming part) all my apps.

This has me pretty angry at Microsoft because they have been utterly useless, and seem to not acknowledge that a stock install onto a bare hard drive of their software has failed miserably to behave properly, leaving me no option but to wast a ton of my time working round their bug. Kudos to those of you with the patience here. I've been on the phone with MS and ended up slamming it down.

Well sorry for all the problems you are having, some folks do, others have no problems. Have you tried the steps that are listed in msg #48 ???

I think the most unhelpful thing is that stupid popup with the error message "Something happened" after it goes thru the update process, downloads, then "updates" then reboots. More like nothing happened! and for God's sake if you know it failed then post why! Thats basic software engineering. I'd fire someone that made that mistake (or in QA that allowed it to get through) in a release product unless they were a very junior engineer. Its a massive reminder of why I left software development and became a medical professional. I checked the event log and nothing there that I could see either.

ok. I understand, but you do know that you can by-pass that check for updates screen, I believe their is an option to finish the install without checking for updates. Their is also a bat file you can try to run, that suppose to reset your windows update. That I can show you where it is, if your interested. This won't delete any of your programs or personal files.

@Murdabenne Actually you should do a complete image backup of your current OS now, so that you can have a choice later to restore your existing OS back incase you screw up your OS trying to repair it. This program is called Macrium Reflect free version.
You just need a 2nd drive to keep the image backup on. Bottom line here is you still have choices. Just depends on how much time you have the patience for. :)

Ive done the reset update script. Doesn't seem to make a difference. It still fails. Same goes for downloading or not downloading the updates - it still ends up going to the restart and coming back with that maddening "something happened" that another user posted earlier. Same for running from setup.exe. Same for simply letting update run the way it wants to (and it reboots and absolutely nothing happens - then it gives me the same update message as before that this version is ready to install and I need to reboot to complete it).

Whats making me crazy is that there seems to be no record of a failure in the event and system logs. Something is so badly broken that it doesn't even realize its broken -- and thats a pretty frightening kind of error to have embedded in your operating system. I'd think MS would be a bit more concerned.

The reset update script was it named WuReset Windows 10 Bat ??? because their are 2 different ones.

I have images done automatically (Macrium paid version) every Sunday night while I am at work (I do cardiac care for complex cases at a Level I trauma center), and file based differential backups nightly. Lesson learned the hard way.

GREAT!!!!! So if you mess up your OS you have made the bootable rescue USB stick too, using Macrium. Incase you couldn't boot back into your OS. I use Macrium myself also.
