    Upgrade from 8.1 to 10 - Update cancelled ... ? why?

    Using Windows Update

I accept the now "important update" to upgrade to Windows 10 from 8.1 from the updates and it proceeds to upgrade. I get the "Your update to Windows 10 is Ready" and reboot. It goes through the configuring update for Windows 10. Next is the Upgrade to Windows 10, Get Started. Downloads, accept the license terms, starts the upgrade and reboots. Configures updates, ... what? .... downloading windows 10 ? again?

Other times, after it reboots and continues to upgrade I get the usual Windows Update window with the update not installed stating that it was canceled. Canceled? What? By who, why? ??? (no error code)

I tried the "Get Windows 10" patch, same issue. I extracted the embedded product key (jelly bean or wmic path ..) and tried to run a fresh install, it doesn't accept the key.

Since this update process, at random, (no domain) I log in and get a temporary profile, yes on a local account.

How do I get Windows ten to install on this laptop?

Use Windows 10 iso file to do the upgrade....................

Use this Tech Bench link to download the iso file :
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...brrWLRbagYCa0w)()

Under Select Edition, select Windows 10 ( 1st one on the list) > click Confirm
Select the same language your computer is now running > click Confirm
Select the same bit version your computer is now running.

Make sure you know where the iso file is going to be saved at.
When the iso file is downloaded, go to the folder where the iso is > right click at the iso file > click Mount > click Setup.exe
    Installation will begin.
You can keep your files, settings and apps or you can keep nothing. Your choice.
    No product key is needed.
    Activation should be automatic.

If you have failed updates for Windows 8.1 already queued for installation and they fail again, when the Windows 10 upgrade setup starts looking for updates, the Windows 8 wuauserv windows update service starts up... and starts to try to download and install the failed uppdates, which fail for the same reason they failed before - the error reports back to Windows 10 Setup, and so it starts again.

One possible fix is to reset the update datastore database ( Windows Update - Reset - Windows 7 Help Forums ) that wuauserv uses, which may be causing the stall, and let the Windows 8.1 update try again to install all important updates, or another is disconnect all internet access to force both the Setup and Windows update servers not to run, so they cannot interfere with each other.

The advantage of the reset is that if your upgrade fails for another reason, or if you decide to roll back to Windows 8.1 in the future, you will have an updated Windows 8.1 to return to, but if you disconnect, you will have additional updating of the Windows 10 system post-installation, and a potentially dodgy Windows 8.1 to rollback to, with even more updating to do to get it ship-shape.

    davidhk .... it worked 100%!
    No issues whatsoever. Activated. Perfect!

Thank you! ... Thank you! ... Thank you!

Does this install only work on embedded keys or will it work for the windows 8 key issues and other key issues as well? (no key?)

    You are welcome.

If you were to do the same on a Win 7 computer, you would have to activate with the Win 7 key.

Please mark this thread as Solved.
    Thank you.
