I'm having a similarly wonderful experience trying to upgrade a laptop. I've upgraded most of our machines, around 7 or so, and had mostly solvable problems, but this one is just not working, no matter what I try. I've tried doing from the W10 logo in the tray, when I do that it completely hangs on "getting updates". I tried cloning the disk, and doing the update from a USB stick, and there it also hangs. I tried updating from a USB stick with the network disconnected, and it actually completes, but then I get an activation error... Must be a bad upgrade day for everyone.

I think MS did a decent job overall with this whole upgrade thing for the most part, but there are a ton of super challenging upgrade problems many people are having that don't seem to have any thread of commonality behind them. Just a bunch of random PITA problems
If you have done the upgrade to version 10586, you should now be able to activate it using your old key (COA key if oem), by going to activation menu and clicking 'change product key'.

After 4+ years of rock solid windows 7 = all hell breaks lose and the time spent on trying to rectify all sudden new quirks is taking up too much time.
Answer, go to windows 10. However as I tried the various ways to install as shown in this thread without success, I decided the only way was to flatten my PC - do a clean install of win 7, and then do the windows 10 upgrade.
As many will know, its takes a long time to upgrade to 10, however this progressed without any problems, and happy to relate all seems to be well.
I hate to throw in the towel (would have liked to have solved my listed problems) - but the time does come when only a clean installation is the only answer.
Anyway, thanks to all for your suggestions etc, much appreciated.

You no longer need to clean install old os and upgrade. You can clean install windows 10 and activate with old key.
