    Questions about W10 upgrade page

I can't move from 10240 to the next build via WU regardless of what I do (have done many things to try an make it work via windows update, all to no avail) I've reached the point of trying the Windows 10 site https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/soft...load/windows10 to upgrade to TH2 1511.

I had an iso downloaded, tried right clicking, mounted the iso, after the upgrade things were not right. Mostly with the display, the existing resolution 1600x900 wasn't even available, there were only 3 choices for resolution none of which were above 1024 range. Updated drivers didn't change it, used the USB to repair/reimage to get back to a useable W10 system.

Created a new USB with a new re-downloaded iso, tried booting from the USB and there were no choices to "upgrade" my existing W10 installation, just install W10 with a choice of Home or Pro, I chose Home, then it asked for a product key. I didn't go any farther because I wasn't sure what it was doing, this should be an upgrade of my existing W10 Home install, not an initial installation. If it's possible I would like to keep everything as it is today, desktop, hardware settings, bookmarks, files, etc...

I want to try again using a different method, when I go to the Get Windows 10 page from the link above there's a button marked "upgrade" will clicking this upgrade my existing W10 to the new 1511 version? I could download the MCT, but if I have a bootable USB iso, do I need the MCT to upgrade much like would happen with windows update?

    Thank you for any replies

Hello! You can download the last Windows 10 TH2 ISO (version 1511 build 10586.0) from Microsoft Tech Bench. In order to upgrade you must download the same language. The language description for English is rather confusing, so to make it easier for you, "English" is English US (American English) that most of us have in our computers when we install the English version. "English International", contrary to what the description suggests, is English GB (British English), not American English as one would expect. Each version can only upgrade the same language version. If you download the wrong language you will be asked to keep your data only (partial upgrade) or do a clean-install. I suspect this is your case, that's why you could't make a full upgrade (keep applications and data), because you have the wrong language. If unsure which language you have, you can execute a command at PowerShell to find out. See the second post in this thread. As for the edition choice, the "full pack" is "Windows 10" (first on the list), and it can upgrade/install both Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro (depending on previous version for upgrade or on serial for a clean installation). The other editions are feature-restricted versions and are intended only to upgrade the repsective restricted version of Windows 7 or 8. Assuming you have a normal (not restricted) Windows 10 Home English US installation, to do the full upgrade you must download the Windows 10 "English" 32-bit or 64-bit (depending on what you currently have). After a successful upgrade you should change from build 10240 to build 10586.0 and after doing all the available Windows Updates you should have build 10586.29 which is currently the maximum public version. To see your current build press Win+R and execute winver.

I hope I didn't confused you. Glad to help.

Went down flames spapakons, I was impatient and before you posted I went to the Windows 10 site https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/soft...load/windows10 clicked on the MCT, saved it to my desktop followed directions in Brinks tutorial Step 4 to upgrade windows https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...tallation.html

I chose to download updates, then install W10, and keep personal files and apps. It did the upgrade, opened up to my desktop said CPU-Z wasn't w10 compatible and would be deleted. It stayed on my laptop which updated from W10 Pro 10240, to Win10 Pro 1511, that update was through windows update and went very smoothly with no change in screen resolution or other problems.

Result this time was the same as the previous attempt, screen resolution was changed to 1024x768 (recommended) with no higher option available, existing W10 install is at 1600x900.

Also not sure if this is of note or not, but when I was in ver. 10586 in settings>windows update>advanced options the Get Insider Builds "Get Started" button was clickable. When I left the insider program after RTM this has always been grayed out on my present installation, I did winver after the update and it was ver. 10586 29.

My first attempt was using the method you describe, I did choose "English" and followed directions, the problem seems to be with hardware settings, it won't maintain my display settings from 10240 or even allow them to be used in 10586.

To make a long story a little bit longer I used the "Go back to previous Build" feature in 10586 and am now back on a working W10 Home 10240, I guess since I told MS the new build didn't work for me it's not offered anymore on WU, only one update, and that was for Defender definitions.

Possibly found reason for display resolution issue when update to 10586, Just now I updated my display adapter driver to the most recent, and display resolution acted exactly like it did when I forced the update (WU always failed to install TH2 1511) with mount the iso, and MCT upgrade.

I'm thinking that I may not be moving to TH2, using an older MB, ASUSTeK M5A88-V EVO with an on board video card, ATI Radeon HD 4250. Don't know why the initial build 10240 works with no problems, and the first subsequent build doesn't.

I'm not really interested in spending another hour+ doing in a clean install, only to find the same problem exists, I have a backup/image taken every Sunday evening so I do have recourse if I decide to do that and things go bad again.

This could be a sign I need to consider upgrading my MB and CPU, those are 10 years old at least, think I built this box in '02 or '03.

That's a known annoying symptom with Windows 10. Each upgrade to a new build replaces all the drivers (no matter working perfectly) with generic Microsoft drivers from Windows Update. That explains the problems you had with resolution. All you have to do it reinstall all the drivers to make your computer fully functional again. Good idea to keep all drivers in a folder such as C:\DRIVERS so you can just run the setup without wasting time to download them again. So when you get some time, do the upgrade to TH2 again and then reinstall all your drivers. You should be fine.

Success, sort of, I'm now on W10 Ver. 10586.0, used the method of opening the iso, mounting it, and clicking setup. All went as it did the last two times, this time I didn't choose "check for updates" when it was installing. After install, the resolution was as I've reported earlier on failed upgrades.

This time I used a program called DriverMax to back up the drivers, the display driver that worked was from Jan. of 2015, the most recent driver was was causing problems. So when it finished installing I opened DriverMax and restored the drivers that worked on the previous W10 version. That fixed the problem, except I'm not so sure about the version, what I've seen is 10586.29. Oh well, I did manage to complete the upgrade without a clean install which is a good thing.

Solution to the problem was a display driver, thanks for the response spapakons :)

As I told you, the upgrade gives you build 10586.0 If you then do all Windows Updates and install all the hotfixes you will get build 10586.29 (max).
