If Windows 10 is already installed and activated, then you can reinstall any time without using a key (click skip or do it later). As long as you install the same version (Home or Pro) it should activate automatically again. If you want to see the key there are several utilities such as ShowKey Plus. If you upgraded free form an earlier Windows version, it will be a generic key.

I found out months ago that anti virus had to be turned off to do Win 10 upgrades.

Now I'm upgrading a second PC to 1511 and the PC seems to be going batty. Hours after being kicked off it prompted me to login to an account, and the screen has been black since. I can force task manager to start but then I see the 'explorer' screen constantly being redrawn, and no clear idea of what Windows is doing. I see 'app control' and Windows Error Reporting' using a fair amount of CPU, also antimalware (Defender). Anyone know what it's doing?

I've never had to disable AV to get Windows 10 updates to install. I'm using ESET, Avast Free, and Symantec EP on multiple systems without having to disable.

This is a risk. Normally, it should not interfere with the Upgrade, but I have past experiences that the antivirus tried to check something during an installation and screwed things! I had to use System Restore to return to a previous working state. So it doesn't harm to turn it off, or even uninstall it!

It's an ongoing quirk; when you do version updates if Defender or MSIE are running, the updates tend to fail with weird error messages.

Under 1511, my PC went berserk after the upgrade finished. I've pinned the problem down to Explorer.exe crashing a few times per minute and restarting. Makes it near impossible to navigate through directories when the screen redraws and all explorer windows disappear and you have to start from scratch. I've managed to get some apps installed, painfully. Even typing this is hard because Chrome keeps losing focus. Also, IE and Edge are unusable; they crash, yet Chrome and Firefox work nicely. Installing Java won't go, probably explorer related.

Win 10 Pro, now running 1511 10586 sort of. Home brew box with an I7 and P8P67 Deluxe mobo, corsair psu, Nvidia 450. Can't get windows event viewer open. Did get autoruns in, eliminated duplicate entries from startup. Try to install Office 365, says it's done, but it's not there.

    Any ideas greatly appreciated!
