Upgrading to Windows 10

Before I installed Win 10 on my old laptop running Win 7 SP1 it was taking 35seconds to boot up according to Bootracer.

With Win 10 installed Bootracer says it now takes 3 minutes and 50 seconds and I think that was the 'best' result!

I've stripped off several unwanted apps and old programs but that is a disappointment. I would hate that to happen to my newish Envy. There are no bugs, rootkits etc that have been found. What is likely to be the cause, is it just that 10 needs more time or what?

You said that the problematic laptop would be an Acer 4810. This model obviously has an Intel Core 2 Solo processor with 1.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB harddisc and it originally came with Windows Vista.

So that laptop is a bit older. Is the laptop generally working slowly or is it only the booting, which takes so long, but inside Windows it is reacting quickly (starting programs and so)?

Hi Joergi, yes I would say that it is the booting that seems to be the problem. There are fewer programs and apps now than when it was running 7. What programs are on it now do seem to be opening reasonably quickly, given the somewhat poor spec (which Microsoft said would run W 10). I've made sure that there is hardly anything on the desktop. About the only thing left on it is eMClient and Firefox, then Webroot Internet Security. These were already om the laptop running 7. I haven't done anything with services as I'm not sure what to turn off.

One thing though, I did add it to my Homegroup.

I think there were speed issues with PCs in homegroups, at least in older Windows versions. However, I do not remember what exactly that was. I think it was the time needed to connect to something. If this is happening during boot, then this might be part of your problem and you might solve it by taking the PC out of the homegroup again. I would just try it - maybe it also does not help.

Another aspect would be to check, if the PC starts much faster, if you boot it into safe-mode.

Finally I would create a boot log and see, if that contains anything helpful.

Got it! I remembered that I had IOBit Advanced System Care on the old laptop so checked to see if it was the latest build and it wasn't. So I removed all traces of it and re-installed latest version.
My best Bootracer time is now 81 seconds, down from 420 (worst) and that includes joining Home Group again.
This gives me much more confidence that upgrading my main laptop should be OK.

A reduction from 230 seconds down to 81, that is a reduction down to one third of what you had before. Sounds good.

Anyway, you had 35 seconds in Windows 7; what you now have in Windows 10 still is more than twice that time...

True, but it is much more acceptable now than before. As to whether I can reduce it even further, well, that means more time spent on an old system that is rarely used, unless my wife commandeers it!
