The W10 TP upgrade option is a trap in my opinion. If you have no means to go back to 7 & 8, you will be forced to buy 10. And for MS, that's $$$$$$$.
I would hope that anyone, who chose to upgrade over their primary OS would have created a system image beforehand. But maybe not....

Is Windows 10 going to be distributed through the App Store like 8.1 was? If so, I'm quite sure you will be able to upgrade to the official release which I believe is actually coming at the end of 2015.

You will not be able to download the preview after April 2015. I think, I may be wrong though. :)

Most probably yes. It will come from app store. But the big question is "upgrade from what?" if you have overwritten your old OS. I do hope these people have backups ready. :)

I see what you mean, now!

Well, I didn't overwrite and if I did I always have my installation disk! :)

I think my heart would be permanently broken if I ever lost my Windows 8.1!!

I am sure everyone will jump to 10. It's just a question of "how" for those who ignored saving a backup. :)

I am playing around with my cloned Win 7 copy, and I confirm that as of today, 04 Oct, the upgrade option is still online for Win 7.

I think the issue is not installing Win 10 over 8. It will surely work fine because MS tested it. But aside from possible bugs in the future (knock on wood), the bigger problem will come in April 2015 when you want to switch to the official release. You have to do a clean install of 8 (or simply go back to 8) before you can get the official release. It will not come as an update to the technical preview.

That's not an issue and I have long planned for that. I'm all set to re-install win8.1 right before I upgrade then re-install the programs/apps I need. And, in addition, I plan on purchasing a full copy of Win10. I for one don't see buying a copy of Win10 as an issue.

The Win10TP is not a "trap". From my point of view if you don't or can't do a full recovery from a disaster then you have the issue. I have a full ISO of both Win7 and Win8.1 and all of my programs on backup media so it only takes me about 2 hours to recover.

I'm the same, I still have an image of 8.1 and 7 saved. I learned my lesson the hard way

I learned form working at several major business that disaster recovery is a must so I always have an image of my current OS.
