    Install error 0x8007045d -0x2000c

Neighbor had his HP 15 laptop fixed and returned with a new re-imaged 8.1.
The problem was with a cracked LCD screen and was under warranty. This
is a AMD A8 with 4 GB memory and 750 GB hard drive.

He decided to upgrade to Windows 10. He run the Windows Update under Window 8.1 to pick up the latest fixes then start the Windows 10 upgrade using USB drive with the Windows 10 Upgrade Image. During the Windows 10 installation on or around 14% over all progress while copying files, he went to slept and let the upgrade continue. The first thing he noticed in the morning was,

"We couldn't install Windows 10 we've set your PC back to the way it was right before you start installing Windows 10
    0x8007045D- 0x2000C
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during APPLY_iMAGE operation."

So he is back to Windows 8.1. We just run a CheckDisk and a quick memory test. Of course, no problem detected.

I just observed that it is at the over all progress of 15% and copying files 52%.

From my past experience, 0x8007045D is normally an I/O operation failure.

Will post more info as we going through this!

Well, it went through about 32% in installation but a quick message about installation failure and recovered back to Windows 8.1.

Need to go to work now. We will debug this and post more info later after work!

Well, I run a chkdsk and restart the Windows 10 Upgrade again. This time went further at 40%+ but BSOD and eventually display an error 0xc1900101-0x30018. Oh, well, this was documented in the Forum here. So, will try to disable, Firewall, WiFi, etc.

The message from Windows 10 Upgrade:

    "We couldn't install Windows 10
    0xC1900101 - 0x20018
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during boot operations"

Ran CHKDSK again but on reboot, it stuck at "Scanning and Repairing Drive C: 10% complete!" message for over 60 minutes.

    Possible hard drive problem?

Back in Windows 8.1 now. Use the chkdsk c: /f/r in the command prompt (admin) to schedule a Check Disk on reboot.
On reboot, stuck on "Scanning and Repairing Drive C:".

Power off after almost 2 hours, try to restart in Safe Mode with Networking, but again it start the Checkdisk and it is at 10% again for the last 10 minutes.

    Any help is appreciate!

Just an update we forgot to post!
We run hard disk utility from the vendor, it failed DST test with an error code.
We simply replaced the hard drive.
    Windows 10 install worked!
