New 4TB drive install..

Am I correct in that your original HDD had errors and you replaced that with a 4 TB drive and that is also exhibiting disk issues?

I'd like to see more details about your machine (Software, Hardware, and Firmware). The Speccy report serves two purposes, one to update your Tenforums specs, and two to provide the current operating environment.

Please update the Systems Specs in your forum profile with complete information.

• In the System Manufacturer/Model Number field, manually type Desktop or Laptop adding it to the information already in the field. The specific model number is important - there are often many models of a given series.
  For example, my machine is a HP Pavilion dv6, but there are tens of the dv6 series, so dv6-6c10us is the specific model.
  
  
• Specify Custom Build as the manufacturer if it is not an OEM machine.

The easiest way to do this is to use the information from a PUBLISHED Speccy report.

Post the link to the report that Speccy gives you and also open the Speccy link.
Then click here to view your System Specs on this forum.

When you have both windows open, put them side-by-side and simply copy the information, field by field, from the Speccy report to your System Specs.

Going back one step - make sure the connector for the HDD is firmly connected. The first time I replaced a SATA drive, I didn't have the connector snapped into the port.

Thanks for getting back to me..
Firstly No I have not changed yet, the reason I want to change is the drive keeps checking for errors gets to 11% and hangs there..
I have done chkdsk /f that is OK no errors reported, just the chkdsk /r that hangs..

For some reason it won’t let me add any more to the system speck but here it is. (now updated)

Was win8 then updated to 8.1. then to W10. All OK no problems… I have made an ISO disk just in case.

PC mainly used for photo and editing with Adobe.

I now have Anker kit to try and clone the disk it worksfine but Acronis gives error message

I have installed Acronis snapapi as suggested by them… Ifthe issue still persists, it is recommended to install the latest updatedSnapAPI driver: 1.Download, unpack and install the SnapAPI1088;

Which I have done still gives same error message.

I didn't see where you ran Malwarebytes - if you did, were there any threats detected?
If you have not run it, please run it before going to the next step.

You can change the order if you want, but I thought that if there is malware on your system, then it's best not to back it up

If I'm in the correct thread, I think chkdsk / f fixed a few issues before. Now you're combatting bad records.

I think it's important to is safeguard your personal data before going any further troubleshooting.

Let's try it this way: Use Mint Mate (Linux) to copy the data
You'll need a small USB drive or a DVD-R to install Mint Mate

Have you tried connecting the 4 TB drive using the Anker Kit? I think that's the best place to store the data you want to keep.

Make a partition large enough the 4 TB drive to hold your data. I don't want to worry about the OS or programs at this point, they can be re-installed. Locate any license keys and original Discs for software you purchased.

If you can save your data, then you can try to copy the OS and programs. It's not as clean as an image backup, and there might be some hoops to jump though to get everything back in order trying to copy the OS and pgms back.

I use the Mate edition - it's spare ... Cinnamon is a bit fancier. Both work about the same.

Mint is a very good implementation of Linux and you might be surprised by how similar it is to other GUI OSes now

You can connect to the internet post on the forum, grab screen shots, yada, yada,yada. For the purposes of copy your data, it's great - you select what you want to copy and paste it in a new location.

It is not instructions I feel comfortable just handing to you though.

Thanks for getting back to me..I have Nortons internet Security installed and is upto date and nothing found..
I have not purchased the 4tb yet I want to know that the Anker works ok cloning to a spare HD disk... I have a good spare drive that I have copied whole directories to using the Anker kit this is really fast if anyone is thinking of getting one..But as stated the Acronis is reporting error (stated above) that the source directory as a problem and is stopping the cloning..I need to find out what is causing this....All my data is backed up on my portable WD MY Book Studio drive.. I have the keys to all my software so not worried about what is on my PC drive, I could just roll back and reinstall to Windows 8 using the recovery program on the disk or from the set of disks I made when I got the pc..But that is too much work with all them updates to do.. I would rather find out what is causing this Acronis problem..

It's always good to know that your data is safe, so you can forget the MintMate post.

It sounds as though there are some bad blocks on your disk (chkdsk /r 'hanging') - quoted becasue it might just be taking a VERY long time to repair the bad blocks (it has to try and read the data, find a good spot to write the data, and mark that area as never use again.

I started writing long instructions to fix the drive, but after thinking about the issue, I think the best recommendation is to retire that drive.

Instead of a massive 4 TB drive, I would install an SSD - this not only 'solves' the drive issue, but it dramatically improves system performance. Kingston HyperX drives are top notch.

Cost might be the prohibiting factor - large SSDs are expensive.
After looking at the Kingston SSD search results, the prices don't seem all that bad ... I might finally upgrade this box!

You really don't need a large main drive though - just large enough to host Windows and programs. Data can be stored on external drives.

If you go the SSD route, you can Clean install windows 10 ... plus you can always access the old drive with the Anker kit if you need something off of it (that drive would become a backup drive, but only to get data off of it, not to use for backups due to the condition)

When the SSD is installed, perform a Clean install of Windows 10

In step one, use USB Flash Drive - Create to Install Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

You want a raw drive (not partitioned or formatted) - Windows 10 install will create the necessary disk schema as long as the drive is empty.

The install asks you to enter a key a few times
Do NOT enter a key on any screen!

You do not have a Windows 10 key that you can enter.
Press Skip this or Do this later - text in the lower left area of the window.

The license key was created, encrypted and stored in Firmware and Registered on the MS Server when you did the upgrade. Windows 10 will authenticate automatically.

All of this is covered in the tutorial, but some people miss the finer details.

You will, of course, have to re-install your programs and let Windows Update (WU) do it's work. The good thing is that Windows updates are cumulative, so aside from device drivers newer than what's on the ISO, you will probably only have to download and install one WU offer

Let me know if you want to try and fix the current drive. I don't think it's worth your time - time better spent installing the SSD and installing Windows 10 clean. Your system will be better, faster, newer

To recap:
chkdsk /r completed after 4 hrs- correct? That's good and bad.
It's good that it corrected the bad spots and was able to move the data to a safe spot on the disk (you won't notice the difference, it's down at the bits level - it just moves the 0s and 1s on the disk - you can't really see it))
It's bad that it took 4 hrs - that means there were a lot of bad spots or a lot of data (it has to find area on the disk to write the bits - if it encounters more bad spots, it keeps looking and trying).
Once the chkdsk is done, those areas of the disk are marked "Do not use again"

You're doing the install on the 4 TB - that's very good.

It sounds as though you're on a good path - I'll read more when you post again.
