You're misunderstanding the process of upgrading vs clean installation.
When you boot from a Windows installation media, it will detect if there is another OS present.
You should choose the Upgrade option.
If you choose a Custom Install, it will allow you to format your drive and start from scratch.

    7th Upgrade Try

After using my HP Assistant for my HP 714-200 Envy PC, and installing all updates including the latest BIOS (as suggested on the HP Forum), I tried to upgrade using the Windows upgrade process, and for the 4th time using this process it failed almost at the end of the preparing your PC.

Having 3 failures using setup.exe from my image burned DVD, I read here to try the boot with DVD. I tried that and after the first screen asking for language and such, the next screen had one option to install, Clicking that, the next screen asked for the product key, which I assume is not doing the upgrade which does not ask for the key. I assume since it is looking for a key, that it is doing a clean install, which you cannot do for free until you do the upgrade...... Again, these are my assumptions from everything I have read, at that is now almost a book......

So, after 7 tries to upgrade, 4 via Windows Upgrade and 3 via DVD from Windows, I give up again. If anyone has any "real" suggestions, instead of just "try this", it would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea what your problem might be.

I have done the upgrade from 8.1 by mounting the .iso (8.1 does that natively). You won't need a DVD or a USB flash drive. The mounted .iso appears in Windows as a DVD. Launch setup.exe from within that, and the upgrade proceeds. No keys, and not many choices. I believe that you have to keep all your files and applications for the Win 10 upgrade to activate.

If you have the right .iso (home vs. pro, 32 bit vs. 64), you won't be asked for a key. (You won't receive one, either.)

That is precisely what I did for an upgrade. You seem to be doing some unnecessary stuff, although that also should work.

You'd probably be OK if you did a fresh install of 8.1 and activated it, and then upgraded to 10. (You need not download the updates to 8.1) You may not want to do that, of course.

The problem is that he has something wrong with his current operating system that is keeping the Windows 10 upgrade from succeeding. He's started the upgrade correctly in the past - there is something on his computer keeping it from completing.

Did clean reinstall of windows 8.1 (fresh media from MS ISO file) on failing system removed all the OEM and other partitions (did Macrium disk image before).
Upgrade to Windows 10 icon appeared but it still says that i have to wait. So I will wait and see if Upgrade completes that means there was something wrong with my windows install.

If you already have the Windows 10 .iso on hand, I recommend using it.

The version will be the same as the online upgrade.

I had no idea on how to mount an iso in Windows 8.1, so I tried right clicking and found 2 options that apparently provide being able to install directly from the .iso in Windows:
    1. Mount as Virtual Drive
    2. View Disc Image
I clicked on (2.) and saw all of the files that appear when burned as an image on a DVD, including the setup.exe. I assume this is the mount option you refer to, which I will try??

It most likely will not work either, as the DVD failed 3 times already with the same files, but at least I learned something about being able to install from the iso file directly off the hard drive.

    Option #1.

You'll see a new (virtual) DVD drive appear in Windows Explorer. Run setup.exe from that.

Mounting and running iso from virtual drive, no go either

As I noted in my previous post, had no idea how to mount the iso on 8.1, but obviously after trying viewing disc as image failed, I tried mounting as virtual drive. Went to this drive, and ran setup.exe which ran through all of the preliminary and starting installing. Got to 24%, and failed, the same spot it has failed, now for the 4th time. So I am up to 8 failed installs, 4 by Windows Update, and 4 by the .iso. At least I found that the error wasn't in burning to a DVD, as the iso failed at the same point running on a virtual drive.

As per a previous post, someone was trying to explain that there is a problem with my OS that is causing the failure and not the Windows 10 source code. Considering this PC is only 1 year old and has all of the latest updates using HP Assistant and Windows Updates, this again is a real sad state of affairs.

And.... I am not going to re-install 8.1 as I only have the recovery drive that came with this PC, which would take me forever to re-create all of the apps and data.

Then I guess you won't be upgrading to Windows 10, either.
