Device not ready to update to 1903

    Got this message:

Device not ready to update to 1903-image.png

Updated (or better tried to update) to 1903 (from 1809), but when i landed in the update setting, i got this message (desktop). Wondering what prevented the update, i first pressed the "learn more" button hoping that it would say why it could not update.
Well, i didn't, it just gave the overall issue overview.
Then i did a search on why my device (desktop) was not ready to receive the update. Up until now i didn't find anything.
    (it's an i4770K with a GTX 1080ti videocard, 2 SSD's and a single HD)
The two "old" things attached to it is are a Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS which needs a bit of workaround to get the drivers installed but this was also already the case with Win7 and a set of CH rudder pedals for which there where drivers under Win7 but not anymore for Win10 (but they do work fine with Win10). Disconnecting them does not do the update either so i recon it's not that that prevents the update.

If Win10 can decide that my device isn't ready to receive the update, it should also be possible to say why it isn't ready.

So where do i find the real reason why Win10 says my device it isn't ready?

PS: updating through the update assistant lets me download the update, install it but after reboot it still says 1809...

This is a newly introduced message, from what I've read (and not before time..).
It would be great if you could get that info.. and a shame it's not offered.

If you already know there's a driver incompatibility that's a start. It could be there are other drivers not yet available for 1903, or that MS has some indication some hardware or software on your PC could be problematic.

If you download the iso and upgrade using that, you should circumvent the protection MS attempts to offer. However, the risk is then yours, and you would be well advised to make sure you have a current disk image from which to restore your system shoud you elect to try that.

Alternatively you could try removing potentially incompatible items (and probably uninstall related drivers) and try again.

For further possible comment you may care to complete your specs. (See mine for comparison).

It's not just drivers, apparently incompatible software (including some 3rd-party AVs) can mean your 'device isn't quite ready' until that software gets updated to be compatible with 1903.

MS has some indication some hardware or software on your PC
    - as I suggested.

Is there any way to get more info as to what the incompatibility might be?

I have seen this... a hint..? (But not what's needed..)

One of the more common issues right now is that there is a problem with drive letters getting changed if you have any USB of SD Cards connected to the system. Disconnect all such drives and then try upgrading again.

I just upgraded a laptop 2 days ago where that was the issue. Had to pop out the Micro SD card and try again at which point it worked like a charm.

    Hi there

Both my desktops (7y-old i7 and recent Ryzen 3) got the same message. I couldn't find why. The Ryzen may be for a RAID driver incompatibility but as I do not have any RAID set up, I cannot upgrade the driver!

Ok, I decided to just wait (as said, it would be nice to know why).

Today at least on my i7 desktop the notification has disappeared. I wonder what that does mean?

    thanks bro67

I appreciate MS is managing the upgrades and I am happy with that. I am not in a rush. Just wondering why my Windows Update page was previously informing me about the upcoming update to 1903, adding that "your device is not ready" and now that warning has disappeared but still the update is not available.

I appreciate MS are not sharing a great deal of information on this matter though.

I read the article. Are MS explaining why my Windows Update page does not mention 1903 anymore? This is what I am talking about.
