    Failed download or another problem?

My Upgrade to Windows 10 seems to fail at each attempt, please see the screenshot below. I have not received a notification re W10 so do not know if the failures shown relate to the actual downloading of W10 or, if it has been downloaded in the background if it relates to installing. I would guess it relates to the actual downloading but if this is so what would cause these failures, a too many attempted downloads on the server or something in my system that is causing the failures?
If its a server backlog I can sit and wait but if its my PC then it could be a long wait!!

Hello Trapper Welcome to the Ten Forums! :) Don't you love how easy it is to see 10 installed?! har har! I had some fun as well as starting early last Wednesday actually having planned a dual boot as well as the initial upgrade and had several fails.

The first question do you have multiple hard drives on the system there and the second item which is a recommendation is to follow the steps for the most part found in the guide for seeing a clean install since some things also play a role in seeing a successful upgrade as I found out here fast!

First here's the link for the guide for the upgrade itself to look over. Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums

Now for the clean install guide which can also play a larger role then you may think first including the UEFI if any problem as far as booting from a usb flash drive as some older main boards simply don't play well. And if you have extra internal hard drives that can be a real headache as I found out. Boot files can end up being placed where you don't want or even need them to be! Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums

Here I cloned the 7 host drive with a second pending a second OS first for the 8 CP a few years back and earlier this year the Technical Preview ended up on a VM. First I assumed the clone to the second drive was the problem but after the first clean install following the wipe of that drive of 7 something was wrong at not seeing 7 start up when selecting the intentional boot entry for that install where I then unplugged the host drive and performed the second clean install of 7 geting all updates on before starting the setup.exe on the USB Install key I made up once I had selected the option to see 10 downloaded to a folder in ISO format as a single file on the drive to be later made bootable with a 3rd party app originally used for 7 but still worked for 10! :)

Well there came Saturday morning and suddenly the upgrade took right off seeing 10 go onto the second drive AFTER note I had looked the clean install guide and noticed the advice to UNPLUG ALL NON OS DRIVES! and correct that is! as I then browsed and discovered boot files from the 10 upgrade attempts on the wrong drive which happened to be one of a pair of storage drives! But while suddenly seeing that success things were still off where device drivers and the apps for a few devices(sound card, tuner card) and even the antivirus software failed!

Subsequently a second upgrade was then performed and there you go things fell together nicely for the time being however until at some point I decide to simply nuke that drive and put a nice fresh clean install on. Eventually you will likely want to see the same thing and will want to get familiar with both of the two guides there in order to see the best results!

    Thanks for the welcome :)

I have printed off the tutorials and had a first read through, must admit the old grey cells have dimmed somewhat over the years so keeping up with modern tech and suchlike is getting harder for this OAP .

I am sure I read that it is safer to allow a windows upgrade than a new install, cannot remember why at present (Those grey cells again) however if a clean install causes the problems you have had I think I should stick with W7!

    Your paragraph:
Here I cloned the 7 host drive with a second pending a second OS first for the 8 CP a few years back and earlier this year the Technical Preview ended up on a VM. Sorry, but you lost me entirely

I have 2 internal drives (one partitioned) and 3 external drives plus 2 DVD's. I built the PC myself and- touch wood -has been totally reliable, a state I would prefer to keep if at all possible.....

I will read up again on the tutorials and some other information I found through web searches as I would first like to find out the cause of the failures shown.

If it would help my drives are as shown:

Now you wonder why I inquired about having other drives! The first thing will be downloading or copying the Media Creation tool over to the main OS drive to be upgraded so you are able to unplug the data cables and usb plugs of the other drives and devices in order to begin.

Now the option to upgrade on the spot or allow the download to take place in iso file is your choice there. The MS toll can see a dvd burned as well as see to it the usb key is made up for you. Note there are three other choices you have to decide from that will also play a large role in which media form you end up using if not seeing an immediate upgrade but to make up a key to consider a full clean install at a later time as well as having the installation media available for any repairs to be made while booted from that.

That's the fun part when something causes an oops! and you have to use one of the recovery tools! Oh yes you will have wished you did use some grey matter and saw to it you had the iso download saved to a folder for the flavor as well as the edition you went with! For the iso download you have the 32bit flavor at 2.5gb, the 64bit flavor which comes in a wee bit larger at right about 3gb or so, and then the surprise is the equivalent of having both installation dvds you would normally have seen with a previous version in iso format coming in at 5.5gb on disk!

For either dvd burn option or usb key the single flavor of the month will fit on a 4gb flash drive without issue. The combination iso cannot be written to any blank dvd to start with due to the size where an 8gb or perhaps 16gb flash drive would be two options. You wouldn't want to use a 32gb, 64gb, 128gb flash drive when an 8 or 16 will see it tended to! :)

Now for upgrades the best are seen when the installation of the older version has just been seen to in order to avoid "CLUTTER"! That would be all that now useless junk not only in the temp folders you probably never even notice as well as the system registry which eventually causes Windows to sssslowww dowwnnn... a bit after some time and why many will tell you "It's time for a clean install! I'm late seeing to it!" because they are trying to keep things in high gear to realize OS performance!

With all that clutter on the other hand expect to run into headaches at times! fortunately once the Windows.old folder is created and should you need a second upgrade install as I ran into here when some things like the sound card and tv tuner card wouldn't install or run and neither would the av program go on until I saw a second upgrade correct a ton of whatevers that prevented things except pc games like a couple that came out 15yrs. ago that were 98-XP compatible still able to install and run on the 64bit 10! while other stuff becomes headaches when everything doesn't go right!

While upgrades can get real buggy many don't like the extra effort to see everything installed fresh while that will favor the optimum results in both OS performance and system stability as far as the OS is concerned insuring softwares see better installs! You have to weight the factors if you find you have the option to see a full clean install once the upgrade is activated the first time.

Agreed, a clean instal is normally the best option, what puts me off this route is that with the supposed upgrade I could revert back to W7 within 30 days if I do not want/like W10. Also and from past experience know that there is a lot of hassle finding old Disks needed to instal various components, a multitude of errors and missing files to be sorted or found. I will have to read up whether it is possible to upgrade from the Media Creation tool and keep W7 alive and kicking for a month, then if I decide to go the whole mile format and instal W10. I am sure some of the tutorials here will give me a lot of help and information as to how to go about it.

I use CCleaner on a regular basis to clear out the crap and temp folders, also the registry for problems. I also need to find out if W10Pro like W7Pro allows a Virtual Machine to run as I have a couple of old programs that will not run under W7 at all.

Oh Well, I have a year to sort this out so am in no hurry. Thank you for your help and advise, I hope I will later be able to update this thread after a painless and successful installation.

    Oh Yeah? Dream on buddy

I know have both ISOs for the Home as well as Pro editions downloaded! If you happen to download both the 32 and 64bit versions of the tool and accidently try to run the 32bit on a 64bit machine or vice versa the tool will stall on the spot with a message stating you need to reboot the machine! Don't! You simply run the opposite version and it starts right up again and when you reach the view folder to save location or open dvd burner screen select the first to browse to where you want the iso image downloaded to.

People seem to rave about that one originally intended for XP. With the Disk Cleanup tool you only see the boxes for temp setup files and other things like service pack restoration temp files taking up drive space while not anything over 15-20gb on average depending on when that is run. Since the 7 drive is no longer the boot drive while mbr entries are still intact while still booting from the 10 drive set as default as with each newer version when dual booting that was run only to find some 18.8gb to clean up since the clean install went on back in June 2013!

Now as far as seeing either an upgrade or full install what I did here to simply things was to create the flash drive only with a 3rd party app after the downloads and run the setup while booted in the fast 7 install to perform the upgrade that did go on! A ton of file and folders likely including some clutter from the then 7 host drive, etc. in order to see the upgrade pick up most of what was already installed to see how it came out. It didn't do so well until that second one went on while the Windows.old folder preserved all those program folders once I first renamed it to Windows.Backup before proceeding with the second which then saw an empty Windows.old as well as the need to copy those same files and folders from the first one!

As for reverting backwards I have been hearing that this is nothing to complicated to see happen while having two not only one OS drive here allows for a working dual boot this time around not seen with 8 once I IDed where the problems were being seen. I still didn't care much for 8 as many others didn't but not this time around since as figured with 8 MS would need a few versions to introduce anything new and complex that would work without headaches as well as how they goofed with Vista when removing support for Fat when every flash drive or camera you plug in uses Fat volumes!

Now as for tending to the upgrade and second upgrade over the fast 7 install the idea was to get familiar with what will work on 10 as well as where the problems are and where the solutions will be! You know with every new version there's always something that will catch you by surprise!

Thanks Night Hawk, didn't understand some of it but made me think outside my box....

Thinks, I want to leave my W7 alone until I am happy with W10. Obviously there is something not right as W10 upgrade fails. So, I thought about clean install over my W7 but would risk losing the lot and be worse off. I then thought about a dual boot and realized I have a spare 279GB HD with nothing on it.
An empty drive just waiting for an OS :). Its not as big as my W7 HD but should give me enough space and opportunity to play with W10... and if I want to I can continue with W7 and still keep a legit copy of W10 for later use.

Any pitfalls I am likely to encounter??

Time to read the tutorial on Dual Booting...............

Well for one you first have to had seen to an upgrade that went well and saw activation before planning any clean install which I still have to wait for here since the first success still needed to be replaced by the second upgrade which still hasn't activated yet. The wait is always fun isn't it?

With a second drive the dual boot won't be hard to set up at all. First however the way you can see an upgrade take place and still preserve the 7 drive is 1) create a full system image backup with either the Backup option right there in the 7 Control panel which would need to be saved on another drive before upgrading over 7. Or the smart move while an image made and saved never hurts is put a temp install of 7 on the second drive there once the first 7 drive is disconnected and upgrade over that once SP1 and all updates are on. But you may still run into what I saw here being the need for the second upgrade to get things working at first until 10 is activated where you can then turn around and put the clean install on!

Here I have the option of waiting to tend to that since I first want to go over 10 with a fine tooth comb before wiping the second after the first 7 drive also sees an overdue clean install of 7! And once the second you have sees the 10 success and you plug the 7 drive back in you can set the 10 drive as first in the boot order and even add a new boot entry for 7 into the 10 BCD being the newer version to see that made the default OS using the EasyBCD program.

The free for home use download version 2.2 being the latest is available presently. I still have the 2.0.1 release from 2010 in use! It's a reliable program that was well written by the programmer/owner there! You can backup the MBR as well as restore/repair with it. And I had to test it on 10 here while some will say they prefer pressing an F key to bring up the bios boot device menu rather then edit the boot loader.

With the W8 Customer Preview I couldn't have agreed more until finding what I just did with 10 that the same problem of having the storage drives plugged caused havoc when having the CP on back in 2012! Despite being the second upgrade so far 10 has been running quite well. It's quite a bit more responsive then 7 which came as no surprise since I had to wipe 7 off completely back in 2013 due to the same problems that come up after about 2 to 2 1/2yrs. time of registry clutter, scattered temp files even the Disk Cleanup tool can't find, etc. where a clean install is a Big Relief!

The snare with the first success at actually seeing 10 install by way of upgrade and the headaches trying to get drivers and the apps for the two expansion cards and the antivirus software so far were the things that back fired on me. In fact the upgrade over that was almost wiped last Sunday morning early I should say when it first seemed a little buggy getting used to things. But I will tend to that sooner or later once it activates for the second time which will tell me I can go ahead with that.

Since you will looking over the tutorial section which is a library of good information to start with I think two of the guides you will want to pay close attention to besides how to perform the upgrade type install as well as the clean install would be the Recovery Drive guide for basically something that now replaces the old recovery disk or flash drive but serves the same purpose plus using at least an 8gb size drive and the second of interest if you do end up seeing the upgrade go through the How to Go Back to the Previous Windows from Windows 10 guide

While testing the write to a second flash drive being a different brand from the first I realized that booting from it does take a bit of time loading due to how much goes onto it and when going through the various screens found the revert to previous build option on the last screen in the advance options.

Note the guide was first posted back in June but you should know ahead of time that the use of any drive cleaner such as the Disk Cleanup tool in Windows or some other 3rd party program like CCleaner will automatically remove the previous version's installation files from the drive where you would be forced to nuke 10 entirely to see a clean install only for the previous version of Windows which is to be expected.

I will indeed see the tutorial guide on reverting back, hopefully I will not need it .

Most of PC work is done on Office 2010Pro but this only has one license so only one install, so a dual boot would not help with that. I have now at last been able to downloaded the upgrade so will continue with that, a large scotch a crossed fingers.

    The solution was found here:
