Windows 10 Upgrade Error 800704DB

Trying to Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro (from Windows 8.1 Pro), getting error message 800704DB. I get past the initial 'agreement' and it then goes through various processes and asks what to keep. Then the install begins and opens into full screen. At around 23-25% it stops with the error message as posted above. I have tried every which way, windows update, from ISO DVD, and from extracted files on different internal hard drive, and USB key.


I got onto MS Tech Support, who after some time decided to remotely help me with the install. The support guy had the exact same problems and did not know what to do. I was eventually passed on to a higher support person.

He decided that as I had a custom built PC, this was the problem. He told me the only option was to upgrade but without keeping anything, and left me to it! Well guess what? If failed in exactly the same place AGAIN.

I was no longer with Tech Support, so I got back onto them. The only suggestion they have for me is to do a clean install of Windows 10, but I have to purchase a Windows 10 Key for $135.00!!!!!!!
So much for a free upgrade.

I have installed the preview and current ISO into a virtual machine without any problem, so it should work. Maybe it is some software or hardware stopping the upgrade.

Anyone else heard of this problem?

Saw your post in the other thread. My computer, which is experiencing similar upgrade symptoms as yours, is a Lenovo notebook, so I doubt it has anything to do with your computer being custom built.

I found another person who has almost the exact same error log file on a Microsoft community page. Is your setuperr.log file anything like ours? (My error log file was found at C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log)

This was used from an extracted ISO, using setup.exe.
The previous error log was from Windows Update trying to install.

My first update to Win 10 was in an old Toshiba Laptop, originally running Vista, but subsequently had a clean install of Windows 7. It went like a dream, no problems whatsoever. That was the one I was expecting the problems with!

Try Clean Boot, see if that helps.

Edit: Ignore the 32 bit stuff, applies to 32 and 64 bit.

Well, we can cross "Clean Boot" off the list now that I've been there, done that, and the Win10 update still bombs out.

Someone on an MS forum who had this problem 'Reset' his Win 8.1, and was then able to upgrade.
I think I will give the reset a try.
I have cloned my HDD, so it will be pretty straightforward to get back to using 8.1 if needed.

Well, I decided to give up waiting for MS to help.

I cloned my system drive. Then did a clean install of Windows 8 (not 8.1, as my MS Key was for 8). It activated straight away. Then I upgraded to Windows 10, no problems whatsoever, took just about 80 minutes in total. There was no need to upgrade to 8.1 first.

I would advise anyone with problems to go that way.
