    Laptop dual monitor question

I just set up a new HP slimline laptop. Has no VGA or Display Port.
Owner has a 19" monitor to use as a dual boot system.
I got a USB to VGA adapter and got the second monitor recognized after installing the driver that came with the adapter.
Problem is that the external monitor is displaying the same size as the laptop display.
How can I get the full display on the external?

    Did you "Extend" or "Duplicate"?

Sorry for the delay. Had to go back to customer's house.

I don't have the option to to extend.
In the Display settings, only showing the laptop monitor. There is a solid black square where the second monitor would be.
When I first set it up, there was nothing on the external monitor until I downloaded the Windows 10 driver from the adapter Mfg web site. Then the screen came to life with the same screen as the laptop.
I've done a lot of dual monitor setups and never had this problem. The second monitor was always recognized in the "Display" settings. Almost forgot. The adapter is a USB 3.0 and I have it going from the laptops 3.0 to a USB 3.0 4way to the 3.0 adapter to the monitor. An older 19" eMachine monitor.

Many new Notebooks are coming with an HDMI port instead of VGA. I have a large monitor with 4 types of input with HDMI being one, VGA, DVI and DisplayPort the other 3. The HDMI should work the same as VGA, useful for projectors and monitors. I've had to use the HDMI connection twice now to save data before replacing broken screens. I'd sure try that for the method in question. There's also available HDMI port to VGA adapters.

    Hi Berton,
It does have a HDMI. I supplied the USB to VGA since I've had no problem with them in the past.
    This machine has a HDMI, 2 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0.
I guess I could try a HDMI to VGA and a USB 2.0 to VGA.
If they don't work, I'm at a loss.
Customer just left sunny Florida for the mountains of No Georgia for a few weeks and has a different monitor so I'll be able to eliminate that if it also fails.

I use a USB 3 portable monitor on my laptop. It uses DisplayLink software. Windows 10 installs it automatically for me the first time I connect the monitor. A reboot latter and its working. It sounds like you have yours plugged in to a USB HUB? I would try connecting to directly to the laptop. That's the way mine is connected.

    Hi alpha,
    It's plugged into a 3.0 hub.
Laptop's one of those (cheapxxxx) inexpensive HP's that's very limited. I think the VGA to HDMI should work if its the hub that's causing the problem. I'll first have the owner try it without the hub.
I've had the same experience you have except this is an old monitor with only VGA.
