I really hate to show my ignorance to all of this but, how do I tell if it's a 64 bit installation or a 32 bit installation? And, are the drivers you pointed me towards the basic drivers?

    I'll try again tomorrow evening.

Click start (windows icon) -> three lines icon in top left corner -> settings -> system -> about (from left column) -> look at system type, the first entry will tell you 32 or 64 bit operating system.

The drivers you downloaded are the Intel Series 4 Drivers. To change to the Microsoft Basic Drivers you will right click on the display adapter listed in device manager, probably shown as Intel Series 4, then update driver software, then browse my computer, then let me pick from a list, in the list highlight the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, click next. After that takes affect, restart the computer.

Then go through the same routine but after you click browse my computer you will enter or browse to the folder you saved the driver to (and make sure it is the matching bit level driver), make sure the include subfolders box is checked, then click next (do not click pick from a list).

You can also right click on the Start button and select the Control Panel option followed by open the System item which will then the hardware info like cpu as well as the "System type:" which will 64bit operating system if you have the 64bit 10 on.

If you are running the 32bit version you wouldn't have any need to worry about the 64bit driver going on since it won't! You would immediately see the "driver can not be installed" type message appear while the 32bit drive on the other hand is still possible to get that onto the 64bit Windows since that has 32bit emulation. Otherwise everything you run would have to be 64bit only!

The real problem even if you are able to get 10 to run there will be like trying to float the Titantic not having anything else for 10 available as far as the necessary board drivers to start with. The 10 upgrade you have on now or a fresh install of 10 would only be good for evaluation and not be something you can count on from day to day!

With the 64bit 10 on you might just be able to get a few of the 64bit 7 drivers to work forcing them to work in a backward compatibility mode. But for the usual run of the mill everyday list of programs being installed you might as well hang that up since you only have the one thing that is for 10. And as for seeing the Intel driver go on properly you should first boot into Safe mode and go into the Device manager to uninstall the display driver that the 10 installer put on first so you are only seeing the Windows basic generic vga driver. Then give the laptop a restart into a normal boot to allow a fresh detection of the onboard graphics chip before trying the Intel driver again. Once you have the correct flavor of either the 32bit or 64bit driver selected 10 will jump for joy and see that go on immediately. You will likely need to see another restart to follow that.

OK, I got this working now. I used a combination ideas. I found my installation was 64 bit. Then I found drivers for my computer using Driver Talent, and downloaded them.

I tried installing them, but nothing worked, so I went through both of your ideas, and finally, what worked was Night Hawk's suggestion of going into Safe Mode, deleting the current adapter stuff, and then starting the computer up, and then pointing to the 64 bit driver that came from Driver Talent.

I did hold my breath as the driver was being installed, but it worked. So now I have the proper aspect ratio, and it's all good without having to revert back to Windows 7.

Thanks for everything. I needed the guidance.

That's great news! Congradulations! Now that you have 10 apparently working well at least as far as the display problem being resolved this would be a good time to see a full system image backup made. You see that stored on a separate drive. System Image - Create in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

The suggestion earlier was actually a continual problem seen over the years mostly with XP but seen with Vista and 7 at times. You would have to get into Safe mode first when something would even prevent a normal boot and then clean out either drivers or some update that was hanging.

In your situation there in order for this to work you had to get rid of the offending driver not simply add anything else on until that was removed entirely forcing Windows to see a fresh hardware detection. Sometimes when drivers suddenly go lame on you you end up needing to use the same method in order to get them back on fresh with Windows making them active.

First however see how the rest goes as far as the sound and other drivers you will still need to see go on and work before the checking on Windows updates so you can each of those other driver sets on one at a time to avoid getting hung up again. It will be interesting to hear how the rest turns out for you regardless.

Driver Talent found four or five drivers that either needed repaired or updated. I'll be working through those this evening. I'll get back with a report. The display adapter was the one I concentrated on first. Again, thanks to both of you for taking the time with this.

Well that was the primary issue you were having and needed to see resolved one way or the other. And with the progress you are slowly seeing going forward don't be in too much of a rush but try each thing one step at a time.

Another option you may want to consider afterwards and before or after a system image is created of the then working 10 install would be the Secunia Personal Software Inspector. That not only keeps Windows updated but most of your programs that will be going on if the rest of the drivers go on without any other issues popping up on you.
