Why not just install the Windows 7 video drivers?

Too old! You are talking "Three Versions Newer" as far as Windows is concerned. In the past some might have used the 64bit Server 2003 drivers on the 64bit XP Pro but despite desktop to server they were still much closer by version. Vista/7 saw a tight bond as far as being able to run anything Vista on 7. 8 allowed 7 drivers to work while 8.1 was moving away with 10 now being that 3rd version.

The same goes for any number of softwares. I couldn't run the 2014 build for the av software used on 7 where at first I ended up with the 2016 beta until finally getting the 2015 on. On the new laptop that saw the finished 2016 go on there. All you can do now of course would be what has already apparently been seen being the 10 installer downloading the drivers available which were for 7 and you saw the result.

I will say the 10 installer saves a great deal of time locating drivers for you compared to the need to have everything already on disk or downloaded ahead of time when seeing a fresh install take place. The 7 laptop I had upgraded here was a newer model HP that did see 64bit 8.1 drivers available which allowed 10 to go on and run without problems since HP had extended support for it. Not so for the older Vista/7 series being the problem you have there.

Newer model with at least 8-8.1 drivers yes. No 8-8.1 support seen? Nada Sorry but I know it stinks! But that's how these companies operate in order to get you to buy newer every time! It was just like trying to find a board that could still see 98SE run after 2003-04! No way it was happening with custom builds even! I had kept 9x running for as long as possible like I have 7 still going here having bought a separate 10 license. The second case strictly sees Insider Preview builds along with the 7 Pro install there I now have on a second drive added in. The next build however may not see any 7 support to work with by then.

I think he already has been since those are the only drivers the 10 installer could come up with. You can still experiment but don't expect much! Generally 3 versions newer means just that as far as compatibility being ancient history. The wallpaper being turned sideways and not being able to change the screen res suggests it was likely a problem seen with the upgrade itself while a fresh install without seeing the update option checked off might be the way to proceed for this type of test.

You would have to pick and choose each driver set separately starting with the display adapter driver(s) first to see how it went. Then the sata controllers, sound, network adapter, WiFi, etc. one at a time. With the HP laptop here that suddenly saw the display quit entirely where I suspect the integrated graphics chip went I was forced to get the best information on it not even having a model number you could find but the 12075 Broadcom adapter number to find the 64bit 8.1 drivers at the HP support.

Night Hawk is correct. The latest available drivers are already installed on this laptop.

You folks are way over my head with all of this, but from what I am understanding, there is no option but to go back to Windows 7.

I will attempt that, I suppose, as there's no use to keep Windows 10.

Again, thank you for your efforts, and I will monitor and read any other suggestions that may evolve.

Wish there were alternate drivers out there to try, third party, or not.

You don't need Winrar to extract the .cab file, just open it in Windows Explorer. Then copy (CTRL-A then CTRL-C) and paste them to a folder you create for the drivers.

    32-Bit:

If you need more help re-installing the drivers, let me know. In response to this thread, I started experimenting with my display driver on my laptop. I switched to the Microsoft Basic Display Driver. Then I updated that back to the Windows 10 driver for my GPU and my display has improved considerably. Don't know why reloading the supposedly same driver made a difference, but it sure did on my laptop.

That will solve the display driver problem at least but not the remaining device drivers which may still see some generic versions for as far as the onboard controllers, sound, and WiFi. Your other alternative option would be to run 10 on a VM. The VM ware Workstation 12 Player is on the 7 side here actually seeing a 10 Pro VM activated while 10 Home on a VM is activated on the second remote tower. All that of course is in addition to the physical installs.

For trying this idea of a 10/7 driver salad mix with NavyLCDR finding some 10 drivers for the graphics chip you have you can try first booting up in Safe mode to see the present 7 display driver removed if not proceeding with the preferred second clean install as long as you have the 10 media made up either seeing a usb installation key with a flash drive or seeing a 10 iso burned to a blank dvd-r. That will depend on what that model allows you to boot from. The old HP here only saw dvd booting!

It will still be a gambit on seeing whether or not the bare bone 10 install not allowing the 10 installer to simply redownload the same 7 drivers can see this work. You would see a normal display at least while you might lose out on other things if 7 drivers fail to work for sound for example. That would allow you to run 10 for a bit however. I thought Digital Rivers did away with the 7 iso downloads you could use on recovering laptops which was one way to see 7 back on again if you can't borrow a 7 disk for the same edition if this still fails to work.

I'm afraid that maybe I could use some help. I just used WinRAR to extract those files to two separate folders on my desktop.

I ran a driver update for the video driver and it gave me two choices, Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1). I loaded the Mobile Intel, and it appeared to be loading properly, as I could see the screen resolution jump to what it should look like. I got a message saying it was successfully installed, and resolution looked good. The screen then went black, and the spinning circle turned into a spinning oval (I knew something was wrong), and then it bounced back to the post Win10 installation screen resolution, with the message that the driver failed to start.

So, it appears as if the driver started, things would work just fine.

Like I said, you guys are way over my head with this, so I can only relay what I see. It seems as if there's something blocking that driver from working. Thought it was going to be OK, but, swing and a miss!

And, if you can impart some info on how to force the PC to look at the drivers I downloaded from above, please send it my way.

Well the suggestion I made here was to first either see the 7 driver removed totally while booted up in Safe Mode or see to a clean install without the updates option being checked off to try this on a fresh almost bare bones clean install to see if you could get anywhere besides trying 10 out without any drivers installed. A VM is still an option available for that laptop you have there if you go back with 7 which does work.

At least you gave it a try are running into the expected snag. The bare bones type clean install where you hold off with the updated to try the separate driver sets out was the better way to experiment with the idea however.

First, do you have 32-bit Windows 10 or 64-Bit Windows 10 installed. You will only use the drivers that match your Windows 10 bit level. You should switch to the Microsoft Basic Video Driver first. Restart your computer. Then right click on the Microsoft Basic Video Driver, Update Driver Software, Browse My Computer - then point it to the folder containing the proper bit level 32 or 64 bit driver.
