Problem with scaling with HDTV

Yesterday I installed Windows 10 on my machine, and am having just one problem so far. I have 1 monitor and 1 HDTV connected to my setup. The monitor connects via DVI, while the TV is connected via HDMI. The problem occurred when I turned on the PC this morning(yesterday I installed Win10), and the scaling options were changed. Everything was humongous on the PC monitor. I eventually got rid of it by plugging the HDMI cable out of the PC and restarting it.

My understanding is, when Windows is booting it detects the HDTV first, and the PC monitor second; and of course scales everything to better fit the HDTV. My question is, can this be disabled? In Windows 7, I did not experience this issue.

Probably the TV is the primary monitor and it is given priority. You have to make the other monitor primary. Click on the search icon and type monitor. Then click on Choose a monitor to be the main display. I cannot help more, as I have a single monitor, but once there it should be obvious how to change the monitors by moving them around or by click at the advanced settings.

You can also configure monitors by accessing your display adaptor's control panel. This is nVidia Control Panel (for nVidia) or Catalyst Control Center (for ATI/AMD) or Graphics Properties (for Intel), depending on your adapter. It is usually accessed by right-click on the desktop or in the classic Control Panel (search for Control to see the link).

Hi spapakons, thanks for replying. The way I worked around this issue was to not have cloned displays, but have extended displays instead. If the monitors were cloned, the HDTV had priority and Windows setup DPI to better suit the large display. The PC monitor was the primary one, both in Windows and in the nVidia control panel.

If the displays are extended however, Windows gives the option to scale DPI on a per-monitor basis, so I was able to set it up the same(100%) on both displays.

The only real difference now is that I can use my PC while having Kodi on the TV. :)

I won't mark this as solved since this is just a simple workaround, not a fix. If someone has another idea or solution, please share.

It depends on what you are trying to do. If you want the same picture on both (cloning) then both monitors must have same native resolution to get a sharp image on both. In your case, the monitor with the smaller resolution has the best image while the other is blur because it has the former's resolution, not its own native. This should explain things. In dual mode each monitor can have its native resolution and picture is perfect on both, but then the desktop is on primary while the other monitor is used indirectly by dragging applications there.

No, the resolution on both displays is the same, native 1920x1080. The image is crystal sharp on both.

Yes, clone mode copies settings from one monitor to the other, so I don't think you can scale each monitor separately. To adjust each monitor separately they must be independent, like in dual mode. So you have to use custom scaling and a good compromise between the two, making sure the icons and text are not too small in one monitor and to large in the other.
