Resolution Problem

Hi Everyone

Have a bit of a problem, just put a new monitor onto my Windows 10 machine after my friend through his camera into my old one and broke it. I was playing around with the screen resolution to see what it could display, unfortunately I selected a screen resolution that is not compatible with my monitor and now all it displays is a "screen out of range" message. Of course in the older versions of windows this was not a problem because it had a count down timer and unless you excepted the changes it would revert back to the last resolution used.

In Windows 10 this feature appears to have been removed so I am now stuck on a resolution that will not display on my monitor, does anybody know how to revert back to a lower resolution whilst not having access to the desktop screen or any other apps. I have found mention of some command line apps like QRes but they require me to be running the command line whilst in the Windows environment. If I create a recovery drive there does not appear to be an option to adjust the resolution available on the drive options, also and annoyingly the F8 command on start up no longer works with Windows 10, so I cannot even select safe mode to change it back, yes I know safe mode can be switched on but that feature requires me to be running the windows desktop to gain access to it, which I am not able to access at present.

So for the time being I am stuck with my screen set to a resolution that will not display, any help would be very appreciated.

Can power down in any way and reboot, try shift+f8 ?Do you by any chance make a disc or upgrade was done from downloaded files ? You see black screen ?

I will try the shift + F8 but I read that this too was also disabled, Windows 10 was installed via the online update tool, no disks created.

Trying to figure another way of getting there. Able to get to the BIOS ? Have any other monitor or how is monitor hooked up, vga, to PCI card or integrated to the motherboard ?

Shift + F8 does not work either, I can access Windows all the way up to the logon screen then the resolution changes to the one that is not supported and the screen then goes blank, with the "out of screen range" message which is a generic monitor message when it is receiving an incorrect signal.

Monitor is connected by a VGA lead through a KBM Switch as it is used on a setup of 3 PC and a couple of servers. The only other option I have is to connect via a DVi lead but the resolution would still be the same and the monitor cannot display the selected resolution.

Can get to the BIOS no problem.

Hard if can not get a picture and can not get into safe mode, need a disc then. What do you have integrated card or slot card ? DVI will get higher resolution then VGA. Any way temporarily hook up another monitor, without the Switch box. As not sure about what to try in BIOS if anything can be done there.

Yes looks like I am going to have to try a direct link from card to monitor with the KBM switch, thanks for your help.

Have better monitor and try different connection,DVI, hdmi .Your welcome. Have a spare disc, make one be good to have

Try holding down "Shift" key, then select "Restart" This will bring you to "Choose an Option" window.

Once at the "Choose an Option" window, select "Troubleshoot"

Then select "Advanced Options" in the next window.

At the "Advanced Options" window, select "Startup Settings"

At the "Startup Settings" window, select either "Enable Low-Resolution Mode" or "Safe Mode"

Press the number which corresponds with your selection. Use number keys or F1-F9.

Make your changes.
