Users said "KBM" switch, should it be "KVM" switch ?
Please connect system directly and test, don't connect via KVM switch first to see if you still can see the desktop or any video.
If video is correctly showed, then it can be sure that the problem is the KVM switch which did not pass correct EDID information or
did not have EDID emulator built-in on the KVM switch.
Thanks for all your help guys, the problem is now resolved as I treated myself to a higher resolution 4K HDTV so was able to adjust the resolution once the new screen was connected.
It should be noted though that there was no way for me to adjust the resolution on the old monitor even when connected directly avoiding the KVM switch, as I had exceeded the maximum resolution of the monitor so unable to switch it back.
