Intel graphics driver keeps rolling back - please help

    Hi,

I have a weird issue with my intel HD Graphics 620 drivers.

Most times I turn on my laptop, I find that my brightness control in Windows 10 no longer works. The screen is dim and turning up the brightness control makes no difference. The fix I have found for this is to update the graphics adapter drivers. There are two drivers installed on my system:

    Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 version 21.20.16.4550 (11/11/2016); and
    Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 version 23.20.16.4973 (28/02/2018)

Whenever I have the issue with the screen's brightness, I find that the 2016 driver is the current driver. If I change to the 2018 driver it fixes the problem. But restarting the PC seems to reinstall the 2016 driver without me asking.

How can I prevent this? I'd like to remove the 2016 driver completely!

    Many thanks

    Matt

    Download drivers to the desktop.

    Drivers typically end with .sys.

    1) Uninstall the GPU driver using DDU (display driver uninstaller)
    2) Re-install the Intel GPU driver from the computer or motherboard manufacturer's website
    3) If the driver is not displayed on the computer or motherboard manufacturer's website then download from the Intel website
    4) The Intel Driver Support Assistant (DSA) can be used.

Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 18.0.0.8 (or newer version if available)

I had the same problem back then when I had intel

There is no solution rather than keeping it, don't remove the old Intel driver, and then from the device manager select the new driver.

Or you can use the last version from your laptop manufacture.

Again,, if you uninstall the old driver, windows update will force it again. Just keep it (don't remove or delete the old driver) and install the new driver on the side

Thanks for the advice. Will this also prevent Windows Update from reinstalling the driver? I ask because haha0 mentioned in reply that Update will reinstall it - Update clearly thinks its the most up to date one, because it wont auto install the 2018 driver and keeps installing the 2016 one.

So, are you saying there's nothing I can do besides what I'm already doing?

If you want you can disable the device ID in gpedit or you can added a registry value manually HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceInstall\Restrictions\DenyDeviceIDs

But in this case you will not be able to update until you remove it and then add it again.

If you want I can guide you, but a simple google will help you

    1) Use DDU to completely uninstall the driver.
    2) After reinstalling the driver perform windows updates.
    3) If the desired driver remains installed then you are set.
    4) If Windows updates modifies the driver and there are problems you can replace the driver and turn off Windows updates of non-Microsoft drivers:

    5) These are additional steps:
    a) Make a brand new restore point
    b) Make a backup image:
