I have this plus cortana won't set reminders and crashes when i hit the reminders button
I had this problem but fixed it with a couple of restarts. I think it'll solve itself up eventually if you just leave it.
I have fixed the issue on my machine. I first booted into recovery mode and used the cmdline to delete the following folder:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_<randomtext>
Then after rebooting cortana wasn't working at all (duh). I reinstalled the package using the following procedure:
1. Open and elevated CMD window (rightclick --> run as admin)
2. Start powershell (type 'powershell' without quotes and press enter)
3. Run the command:
Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.Cortana | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
Within 10 seconds my search was back to normal and I could finally put this problem to rest. It might not be required to delete the folder in safe mode first but I don't know yet because I am yet to test this procedure without deleting the folder on another machine. I'd be very interested to see if running the command above in powershell also fixes the issue without having to delete the folder first.
I had rebuilt the search index many times and rebooted and left it to rest but nothing seemed to fix the issue which is when I started digging for a solution.
Lemme know if this works for any of you guys
Good stuff.. Thanks for testing. I had this problem for some days now and decided to ignore it until Microsoft would patch it. But now this has also appeared in my (new) workplace so I had to come up with a fix.
As I stumbled across this topic during my initial investigation (google ghehehe) I thought it would be nice to register and share it as more people seem to have the issue.
Happy days..
I'm getting an error and now my search is totally broken-
Add-AppxPackage : Cannot find path 'C:\AppXManifest.xml' because it does not exist.

Try it this way, Re-regiter all apps
Apps - Re-register in Windows 8 and 10 - Windows 10 Forums
or see what get-appxPackage returns - it will be all apps, so you'll have to scroll though the PowerShell screen looking for Cortana instances. That will at least tell you where the manifest is located.
Unfortunately, this didn't fix it for me... I'm still getting the "we're getting search ready" message. Debating if I should just wipe my machine. Why can't MS give us errors that make sense?
