I'm running Windows 7x64 and while I don't have the c:\$windows.~BT folder I do have a couple of large files that downloaded this morning to c:\system volume information; one is 800k and the other is 2 gigs. They have long names made up of random letters and numbers. I don't know if these are related to the upgrade.

Give it time. Started less than 10 minutes after turning on my laptop when I found out about the folder on another website. Less than half an hour later the ESD file was just under 3GB. That $windows-BT file is hidden. Go to Control Panel > Folders and check show hidden folders

Yes I looked at your screen shoot, but imacanadian stated "I see your screenshot and have the same message about " Upgrade to Windows 10 failed" Big difference. Why assume the upgrade that failed is the upgrade to Windows 10? That's not supposed to happen until tomorrow some time. It could be any upgrade that failed.
The final bit of code to start install comes tomorrow.

Currently no $Windows-BT folder, though I do have several pending updates. Time to restart.

I've seen a post (or two?) about failed installation of updates. Here is what my history shows me. All of the updates I've received today:

In addition to the above, I keep getting this notification on my shutdown button, to install an update and shutdown the computer. After doing it nothing is installed, of course. My personal and subjective opinion: a glitch/bug in the Upgrade procedure. Windows 7 64 bit, Home Premium.

    Got a Install.esd file 2.62G modified 28/07/2015 in the folder Windows-BT
I think its pre-stuff and not the main upgrade for tomorrow

If you look at the history, it shows the Windows 10 upgrade that failed. It has already failed twice now on my laptop this time with a different error code. My guess is that it is being slowly downloaded. My desktop seemed to have finished downloading 4.6GB but still it show that the Windows 10 upgrade failed. That is correct, my system is still running Windows 8.1 Pro until tomorrow.

I am new here. My Laptop running windows 8.1 is now updating after i restarted the machine. On the screen it says "Keep your PC on until this is done. Installing update 1 of 1. It's been like this for 30 minutes now. Windows 10 installer files finished downloading 10 minutes before i restarted the machine.
