This is the second time the Windows 10 startup error pop up "Start Menu and Cortana aren't working..." I followed the instruction to restore the OS to a previous state and it works now.

    Thank you

After installing Windows 10, I got the message, " * Critical Error * Start Menu and Cortana aren't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in. " As directed, I logged out and back in, shut off and restarted several times, but nothing worked. Web search showed you could revert to the previous version of Windows, but the critical error message wouldn’t let me use anything. Even installed programs compatible with Win10 like Adobe InDesign weren’t working properly.

I tried a lot of the fixes on forums and finally gave up and called Microsoft. After 2 hours on the phone with a very patient tech, I was able to roll back to my previous version, 8.1. Try this:
    1. In the critical error message, click to log out.
    2. Don’t log in. At the bottom right, click the power symbol, then click Restart and hold down the Shift key. Keep holding Shift down while the computer goes down and restarts. This should take you to a Windows menu page with a number of options. The last option will allow you to revert to your previous version of Windows.
    3. If your computer comes back to the login window, repeat hold down Shift and Restart. I had to do it 3 times before it gave me the menu.
My computer hung up during the reversion process. It looked like it was working since the cursor was spinning, but I was getting no action on my disk drive light. The tech said shut it down, so I held down the power key for a hard shutdown. Then I turned the power back on and the reversion restarted. This time I was back to my old version and everything looks fine.

I’m committed to going to Windows 10. At least now I know I can go back if it doesn’t work next time.

I found the Dropbox uninstall/reinstall fix elsewhere and it worked, for a week or so. Found this forum and tried RadDad's suggestion and it worked! Hoping it stays fixed. Thanks!

CRITICAL ERROR - Start Menu and CORTANA aren't working. W'll try to fix it the next time you sign in. SIGN OUT NOW

I upgraded from WIN 7 SP1 to build 10240 on FAST Track. I did a RECOVERY DRIVE, and after trying to restore from it, I am getting this message - in a loop, can not exit from it. I also find my backup and system image do not work.

How do I get out of this DEEP hole?

Thyanks for any of your help.
Same exact problem... even Microsoft's tech support couldn't help. Suspect it is Symantec's Antivirus causing 1511 update to fail and now I get the "CRITICAL ERROR - Start Menu and CORTANA aren't working. W'll try to fix it the next time you sign in. SIGN OUT NOW..." I'll try to figure out how to boot up the damaged computer so I can shutdown the antivirus and see what happens.

I am sharing my solution on every site where I found helpful advice. I do not have Avast, have tried the sfc scannow solution, the safe boot, the F8 and everything else I found online but nothing worked. Finally I found a thread on the Dropbox Community that suggested that Win10 had a conflict with Dropbox. Per their instructions I uninstalled Dropbox (I use Revouninstall and then CCleaner to clean up), rebooted and found the Win10 Start menu functioned just fine. I then reinstalled Dropbox, have rebooted several times and the Win10 Start button continues to work just fine. If you've tried everything else and you happen to have Dropbox on your machine I suggest giving this a try.
I just deleted Dropbox and I got the Start menu back again. I'll try to reinstall and see what happens.

I thought I had got on top of this problem but no.. After uninstalling Dropbox all was ok for a week or so, so I reinstalled and all was good for about 4 weeks. Then got the error again. Uninstalled Dropbox again and all is well. I'll do without Dropbox for the time being.

Thanks, Lert. So far mine is working with dropbox, but I'll keep an eye on it.

As i read all the comments about avast causing this critical error thing, i dont think it really has something to do with that. I have been using avast premier on all version of windows & it's not causing any trouble for me..are you guys using a cracked avast? there's a real definition on this problem explained by microsoft. i read one of their forum & stated that it is caused by an update which is buggy & still they are finding an solution update on this.

I was searching endlessly for a solution, reading though this thread got me to uninstall Dropbox. And it solved my problem. I didn't had Avast, so I was confused at first. Still, not sure how these programs are interfering with the start menu, it seems. I need Dropbox, so I'm gonna have to re-install it. Hopefully it's just an innocent bug.

    Thanks for the input guys!

Edit: Looks like there's something extremely buggy with my Dropbox on PC that just messes up the Start Menu along with the Microsoft app store. Had to uninstall once again, and everything is working like it should be.

I encountered the error on my laptop in August of 2015. It emerged right after I installed some updates. Then I used system restore and rolled back the system to the previous state. But today I encountered the same error on my desktop and again after the update! And to my surprise the system restore was off and I had no points to roll back to... I was about to reset Windows 10 but you know what... I launched ms-settings:windowsupdate manually searched for updates... it found updates and I installed them. And after the reboot I had all things working again!
