I have now tried replacing the faulty start menu in one account with a working start menu from another account. This worked to some extent, the start menu in the faulty account now has all the tiles present, but many of them do not function. Very frustrating. I have also tried copying all of the files and user profile info to a new account, but this does not work very well either; the files are not where they should be and my bookmarks in Chrome have not copied over, etc, etc.

No, it helped but did not solve the problem fully
It fixed my PC but I just had another PC in our company critical error, uninstalled dropbox and within 1 minute started critical erroring again. This is absolutely insane.

I am sharing my solution on every site where I found helpful advice. I do not have Avast, have tried the sfc scannow solution, the safe boot, the F8 and everything else I found online but nothing worked. Finally I found a thread on the Dropbox Community that suggested that Win10 had a conflict with Dropbox. Per their instructions I uninstalled Dropbox (I use Revouninstall and then CCleaner to clean up), rebooted and found the Win10 Start menu functioned just fine. I then reinstalled Dropbox, have rebooted several times and the Win10 Start button continues to work just fine. If you've tried everything else and you happen to have Dropbox on your machine I suggest giving this a try.
Same here. Your post and this site helped me solve a huge headache bothering me for quite some time, so I want to give back!

Yes, uninstalling dropbox worked immediately for me, nothing else worked...Thanks gophigure and tenforums!

I found that opening task manager and doing an end task on the Local Security Authority Process ( 5 ) would reboot the computer and clear the error.

Press Ctrl Alt Del buttons at the same time . The Task Manager window opens. Then locate the process I mentioned above. Right click it and choose end task. Wait while the computer reboots.
Thank you - this worked for me .......... :)

    Hard Reboot

    1. Power the PC up and log in
    2. when you get the message pull the power out of the back with out shutting down
    3. wait 5 sec.
    4. plug power back in
    5. reboot

This took care of this message for me on 3 different computers.
    KWB :)

I upgraded from WIN 7 SP1 to build 10240 on FAST Track. I did a RECOVERY DRIVE, and after trying to restore from it, I am getting this message - in a loop, can not exit from it. I also find my backup and system image do not work.

How do I get out of this DEEP hole?

Thyanks for any of your help.

    Fix Win 10 Critical Error

Here is a solution for me, i found it on an earlier post by big 10. Follow these simple steps.

    1. At the same time press the Alt/CTR/Delete button (this will bring up a red screen with the task bar)
    2. Move your curser to the bottom right corner on the power symbol, left click it and select restart.
    3. Log in as normal.

This is such an easy fix I wish i could bump this to the top. Hope this works for you!

In case anyone on this thread is still having issues, I found something that worked for me. It seems like there may be an issue between Dropbox & Windows 10. I uninstalled it & restarted my computer. The critical error is gone! I don't know if there are any other issues, but this solution actually worked for me.
My neighbor's Windows 10 Start Menu has been crashing with a critical error for some time. I saw this post, and we uninstalled Dropbox last night (12/9/2015) and rebooted his laptop . His Start Menu works fine now.

    Brian,

    Thank you this posting.

My wife's laptop does not like having the power-supply turned on while it is booting up, but hey, I forgot and when it jammed I held the power button down to kill it.

After five retries to the "Start menu & Cortana aren't working. We'll try to fix it next time you sign in." message I found this thread through my laptop.

Anyway, I followed your suggestion and was greeted by an 'Updating your computer' message. This took three minutes to get to 30% completed, a second reboot that said 70% completed, and a long time to actually start. But start it did, so thank you very much for this 'uninstall free' method of over coming my stupidity.
