    edee,

That doesn't fit because if that was the case Rocky would have an expiration date after leaving the insider program. Keep in mind Gabe said you can leave the insider program anytime if you upgrade from windows 7 sp1 or 8.1 and windows 10 will remain activated otherwise you have to roll back. If you go by what you said, everybody that wants to leave the insider program would have to put windows 7 sp1 or windows 8.1 then upgrade like everyone else.

    Another thing,
A lot of news site consider 10240 an rtm release including Microsoft forums.
You can leave anytime after the 29th and remain activated. If you do so before the final release, activation will time out as you will still be running a preview build, and you will have to go back to your previous OS. Any build other than 10240 will time out for sure if you opt out. 10240? I'll believe its RTM when somebody from Microsoft, like Gabe, officially says so.

I should have added also if you don't have a qualifying version of Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 , an insider running a non qualifying version of Windows once they discontinue being an insider their insider preview will eventually expire also and will need to purchase a Windows 10 license.

It may be considered by many to be an RTM version but this version (10240) is ONLY available through Windows Update, there is no ISO file to download, Microsoft is not making available the ISO file, even to insiders, If you do have an ISO file it is home made, it was not from Microsoft.

Listen, I know there are a lot of people looking for a loophole in a way to get a free final version of 10 without having a qualifying version of 7 / 8 / 8.1 but like I said, I would not make it my main OS because I can say with all certainty that if you do not have a qualifying OS or if you are not a Windows insider eventually your license will not work, how long that will take is anyone's guess

That not what Rocky did. He upgraded from a qualifying windows version. Instead of waiting tell the 29th, once he upgrade to build 10240. He left the insider program and the build remain activated with no expiration date. I would sure call that an RTM.

I was not implying a way to get free windows 10 without a qualifying version.

if Rocky has a qualifying version of 7 / 8 OR 8.1 or he/she is an insider then yes it will remain activated, if not the license will expire without a qualifying version or without being an insider, I can say that with all certainty, IF by some chance it remains activated without one or both options mentioned above being true it was done illegally.

FYI - even though 10240 is being considered an RTM version there are going to be updates to it right up until release day, so actually the final RTM will not be until the final update before release.

You can call it RTM if you want, that's up to you. I'm not convinced so I'll wait it out. IMHO, there is nothing to be gained by opting out of the Insiders program now, versus waiting another week or so. My 10240 shows no expiry date too and I haven't opted out. So what's the difference? If it isn't RTM and you opt out, you may not get the final official release automatically. Then have to opt back in etc.

The Windows insider program is closed ....... for now at least until after release, if you have opted out, there is no way back in until after release.

I know all that but one correction though.

It says you need to wait tell the 29th to do that. However, Rocky did what was underline early so far with no ill effects and no expiration date. See below.

Upcoming changes to Windows 10 Insider Preview builds [UPDATED 6/22] | Blogging Windows

I want to opt out of the Windows Insider Program on 7/29.” If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer* that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers. This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire.
However, after re-reading this, it sounds like you should opt-out before the installing the build on the 29th but I could be reading it incorrectly.

    Hi there

I'm confused now -- if build 10240 is as good (or for most people as near as good) as it will be for the Windows delivered to people after 29 Jul - and it's activated already what is the point in purchasing new licenses.

I've got about 6 versions running -- I just don't envision Ms as a company that dishes out that amount of FREE Software -- so I'd assume these must become de-activated some time in the future.

Anybody got any knowledge or info in that. Previous builds were set to expire on 02 Oct.

There's no expiry as far as I can find out currently on activated 10240 builds.

    Cheers

On Monday, Aul clarified that Windows Insiders won't be getting Windows 10 for free, at least not exactly.

Though July 29 marks the release of the "final" version of Windows 10, Microsoft will continue to tweak and enhance the operating system beyond that date. The company will also continue to run the Windows Insider program, through which participants can download the latest preview builds to test Windows 10 as it continues to evolve and then offer Microsoft their feedback.

And it's those preview builds that Windows Insiders will freely receive on a regular basis. Each preview build expires at a certain point, but Microsoft promises that it will be replaced by the next build. So in essence, those who wish to remain in the Windows Insider Program can get Windows 10 for free, but the version you run will always be a prerelease build, in other words a non-activated beta product.

"Since we're continuing the Windows Insider Program you'll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program," Aul said. "We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software."

Those who wish to upgrade to the fully-tested and public release of Windows 10 on July 29 as well as in the future still need to be running Windows 7 or 8.1 to qualify for the free upgrade.
As Aul describes it in his blog post, users can choose from a couple of scenarios:

I don't know about all that, all my machines qualify for the update and I am also an insider, I run my preview or RTM version in a virtual machine. I don't plan on updating any of my systems until release day or somewhere thereabouts and even after updating I plan of running the preview or as you put it RTM version in a virtual machine just so I can judge as to when to run Windows update as my updates will not be forced because I run the pro version.

I think you are reading it wrong. Whatever new build Insiders receive on or around the 29th will be the legitimate 'release' bits. It may not even be a full build release - maybe just an update or set of updates to turn 10240 into the real 'retail' deal. I very seriously doubt a new Preview build is going to come along until a bit of time has elapsed from the 29th and the dust has settled. So if you are happily running 10240, upgraded from a legitimate 7/8.1 licensee, I'd just wait until th 29th, see what happens, and when it happens, THEN drop out of the IP if that's what you want to do.

I am sure there will be official guidance on this as The Day approaches...
