I downloaded the Windows 10 Build:10166 ISO about a week ago and did clean installs on 3 of our computers.
I installed all 3 using a 16gb. SanDisk flash drive. This seemed better then burning a DVD.
And here is the program I used to format the flash drive: https://rufus.akeo.ie/

Create your own. Do one upgrade then use the ESDtoISO tool to create the ISO then burn a DVD or create a flash drive to install from. That's what I did.
But will that still work from the first upgrade from W7?

    Hi there

as others have suggested -- you currently have to "Roll your own" ISO from the ESD. The tutorials explain how to do this. There currently is NO official ISO for build 10240 -- although there are unofficial ones "out in the wild".

    Cheers

Just wanted to throw my experiences out there. I joined the insider program about 6 months ago and have been getting the updates regularly. When the 10240 version came out I updated one PC via the update route. I then used the ESD file from that installation to create an ISO to make a clean install on a second machine. The installation worked OK but the activation will not work no matter what you try. I had to revert back to the old version via an image and then do the in place upgrade to get a validated copy. It will be interesting to see how you end up with installation media that will activate properly.

I have at least 5 Windows 7 PCs in my house and one on my boat. I really don't want to have to download Windows several times, especially on the 3G only computer.

There was an Insider article that stated "You will be able to download the update through Windows Update or you can download .ISO media and use it do an in place upgrade ..."

Has anyone seen an official source stating when the Windows 10 Upgrade will be released as an ISO?

By the way, great news that this forum has evolved from the fantastic SevenForums, always my first port of call.
Nothing yet on where, but from the same article:

    Summary

    .....
You will be able to download the update through Windows Update or you can download .ISO media and use it do an in place upgrade. For many persons, using ISO media will be the preferred method since you will have a backup copy for reinstall purposes if needed. Also for persons with limited bandwidth, this will be an excellent way avoid the need to download the update more than once if you have multiple computers. So lets take a look at upgrading to Windows 10.

    Details
Please be aware that you cannot use the free upgrade offer to perform a clean install on first attempt.
You must first upgrade from the qualifying version of Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 (whether you do it through Windows Update or using the .ISO file). Ensure the upgrade is completed successfully and then ensure that it is activated.
You can then proceed to do a clean install by using recovery media or using the Reset function in
Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC (Get Started).
I do know that certain devices require an ISO to upgrade, but I guess MS is keeping mum until after the launch to avoid users downloading the ISO when a device doesn't require it.

There are some discussions on creating a recovery drive, but I think that's unrelated - it might work as a general install media or it might be specific to the one machine the recovery drive was created on (Windows automatically activates from the qualifying OS key).

At a minimum, you can roll your own ISO from the ESD so you won't have to go through the WU download on each machine. That would not be well accepted by users, so ISO will be made available - they're just not telling us how or where yet

Keep your eye on TenForums - someone will post the information as soon as it is known.

Interesting post which got me thinking. I put another thread out in the general section abut your experiences (and shamelessly used your post to back my point). I betcha that MS will NOT VALIDATE any update that they do not push out themselves.

MS stated that the only way to activate 10240 was via upgrade not clean install.

I think the only method of getting Windows 10 that validates on a clean install is to buy a copy of it! Yes, we will have Win10 licenses after we upgrade and can then do a clean install. But this may have a catch: there are rumors abounding about how long the "free" upgrade will be supported with security patches and updates. Hopefully a purchased copy will be valid and updated forever.

I did an upgrade of 10240 over Win8.1 and it did activate(or stayed activated since WIn8.1 was activated).. so there is an easy way to get 10240 to activate.
