    Windows 3.1 to Windows 11

If you purchased Win8/8.1 to upgrade win7 - reinstall win7 on your PC and upgrade it to win 10
Since you purchased win8/8.1 you can now transfer the key to another non-free-upgradable PC
then update that to win10 also

I see no reason to supercede a windows 8/8.1 product key to windows 10 > on a machine (PC) that already had windows 7 installed
Save your retail windows 8/8.1 key (from being superceded to windows 10 on that PC) and use it (transfer it) where it can be better used

Yes, that should work for a full version of Windows 8/8.1, but not for an upgrade copy. Unless, of course, you already have another Windows 7 to put the upgrade on. :)

Just to mention the possible (but probably illegal):

How to Perform a Clean Install of Windows 8.1 With a Windows 8 Key

This works with a Win 8 upgrade key.

I've used it to avoid having to install Win7, followed by an upgrade to 8 and then to 8.1.

(Having to download and install > 1GB of Windows updates to bring 8.1 up-to-date is enough punishment in itself.)

I feel your pain! I just did a clean install of W8.1 Pro a couple of weeks ago. It really did a number on my monthly data allotment.
