windows 10 no longer uses a Recovery Image (install.wim / esd) - they have changed the way windows 10 recovers - they have also changed the partition layout.. Windows now reconstructs itself using the component store and it is a windows only recovery (reconstruct.wim)
if you want to include your installed programs - you now need to create a provisioning package (custom.ppkg)

Go into control panel - recovery - create a recovery drive (on newer builds) and windows builds the recovery image
if you mount the reconstruct.wim - you'll notice it does not look like a full OS layout (mounted install.wim)

    Kyhi
What is the new partition layout?
Then is it better to do full install than upgrade from windows 8.1?

I'm confused. When I upgraded my VM to 10166, there was a install.esd in C:\$windows.~Bt\sources. I used it to create a iso that I then used to upgrade my Laptop with by mounting it and running setup.exe.

Is this only talking about Create a recovery drive?

older preview releases use to create a recovery image folder C\recovery - which newer releases do not..
He did not get the esd in time - it was deleted

Yup . . . I've been able to find it from Build 10041 all the way to 10166.

Interesting .... is there documentation on this? I recall a member mentioning that the 450 MB partition was created AFTER his other partitions on one recent build, so I'm curious about what the changes are.

I'm particularly interested in MBR initialized disks (my machine), not GPT. How would Windows install do this in an upgrade scenario.

Always find your posts full of good stuff - perhaps a bit too technical for the average user (I scratch my head on some of the stuff ) ... but I do learn from what you post. You make me think and double check my understanding of the way things work now.

    Thanks,

    Bill
