I'm not sure this will help, but I upgraded my laptop to Win10 and my desktop is still on Win8. I had set my Taskbar jumplists to 20 on my desktop Win8.1 machine, and the automatic syncing synced this setting to the laptop I just upgraded to Win10. So you might be able to create an account on some Win8 machine, set the jumplists there, and then sync this to you new Win10 machine.

Are you getting 20 items on your jump list? I don't think the new taskbar is capable of that setting. I upgraded from 8.1 with that setting and only have 10.

Yes, I'm getting 20. I was going to increase from 15 (my prior max on my laptop) but found the syncing from my desktop increased it to 20. I also found that it synced back the other way, causing the taskbar on my desktop to autohide like my laptop which I didn't want on my desktop, though, so I turned off the syncing.

Can you post a screenshot please?

Now that I've used it some more, I seem to be getting even more than 20, up to the vertical screen resolution in fact. Look.

That's good news - it means the OS still supports that setting on the new task bar somewhere in the registry.

Can you post a screenshot of your registry entries under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced ? Maybe we can identify the setting.

Surprised there hasn't been a followup to this. Indeed changing Start_JumpListItems to a value of 15 as shown in the screenshot works, at least in File Explorer.

So I tried changing Start_JumpListItems many times before, and for some reason it never worked - the list size was limited to 10 files regardless of what was in the key. In fact, my Start_JumpListItems was already set to 20 before I got this working today.

There are 3 possibilities I can think of as to how I got it working this time when it wouldn't work before (also reported by others):

    1. I cleared the jumplist cache today by deleting all files in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
    2. Thanks to kconover posting his screenshots, I noticed that I had an extra key under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced that he didn't, called EnableXamlJumpView. According to this source, that key is supposed to "enable" jump lists in early versions of Windows 10. I deleted that key, changed my Start_JumpListItems from 20 to 15 and restarted my PC, and BOOM I was able to get more items! I bumped the number up to 30 and restarted explorer and I was able to have 30 items pinned.
      • However, I was not able to verify that EnableXamlJumpView was really what was forcing the limit. I tried adding the key back just to test the theory, but it didn't prevent me from adding more than 10 items to the jumplists. It doesn't hurt to try if you still have no success. Instead of deleting EnableXamlJumpView, you can also set the value to 0.

    3. It is possible that recent windows update may have changed the start menu behavior, and changing the value of Start_JumpListItems triggered a the higher limit, but that is unlikely.

I'm curious if the same thing works for you guys. Now all I need is for Microsoft to fix the start menu bugs that exclude most of my programs from the start menu, and I'll be a happy Windows 10 camper.

Well, you cracked your code (and I'm happy for you), but it is not a universal solution. I never had EnableXamIJumpView as a key, and still can't get any jump list to show more than ten items on the task bar.
