I sooooo want a new laptop.

My current laptop is an i5 with 8GB of memory. It's ok, but doesn't really work for my usage.

I was about to spring for a new Thinkpad W451, with 32GB and an i7 4910HQ. However, this is a 4th generation Core processor and getting long in the tooth.

The 5th generation processors are only available in U sku's, which are "Ultrabook" sku's. They only have dual core i7's, and though they use a lot less power than the 4th Gen Quad-core i7's, they just don't have the oomph i'm looking for.

So, poking around, I discovered that Intel is releasing their Sixth Gen Skylake processors early next month. They say these are the most significant improvements in the last 10 years. 14nm Quad Core processors, plus cool new features like Thunderbolt 3.0, SATA Express, Iris Pro graphics with Direct3D feature level 12.0 with up to 128 MB of L4 eDRAM cache on certain SKUs. Also, it's saying goodbye to VGA support, while supporting up to five monitors connected via HDMI, DisplayPort or Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) interfaces.

They'll also have Rezence wireless charging, and wireless docking capabilities (you can just leave your laptop sitting on the desk with no wires, and use it wirelessly for keyboard, mouse, display, etc..)

Anyways, I am now convinced that I should wait for these to land... I'm hoping OEM's have stuff ready to go.

    Hi there

I don't know how your finances run but I'd be very tempted to look at the SURFACE PRO 3 (there's a new model 4 I think also coming out soon).

With a docking station these IMO easily can replace any current laptop and probably for a good many desktops too.

The graphics can drive even a HUGE external monitor at full 4K.

Main problem of course is the price but if you can run to it --well worth every cent - especially if you travel a lot.

    cheers

Yes, I do like the SP3, but it is a dual-core processor, and it has a max of 8GB, which is not enough for me. I need at least 16GB, but would prefer 32GB.
