    well.. ok then.

I'm a little confused. this is the win 10 forum, is it not? I was under the impression that we are discussing a win 10 issue. 3rd party programs may solve this new-win10-issue, but I am reminding everybody: in previous versions windows remembered the window/program position of the windows explorer. in win 10 when windows explorer is reopened it opens in a new location and only the windows explorer and the new microsoft edge have this 'problem'. why should I use 3rd party programs to avoid/deal/bypass this issue?? so thank you chezz for your comment, but if I want an apple, don't give me a banana.
Just giving you a fruit that'll fix what you're whining about.

I had no problem with any of the windows in Win7 remembering the location it was last in before closing.
[...] Occasionally I would get a program that would not remember its last position so I would have to force it to remember by holding down the shift key when clicking on the "x" to close the program, then it would remember its position thereafter.
[...] All of that seems to work fine in Win10, EXCEPT with File Explorer, which wants to open up against one corner of the screen (for me it was always the top left corner, but starting yesterday it started opening against the top right).
    [...]
Would love a fix/workaround that does not involve a third party software that has to stay running all the time.
windows *does* remember the old location... -just messing with you mystere-

but seriously: it seems some people recognize this, because it bothers them and some people don't know what all the fuss is about. so I conclude that we who are bothered by the new-win10-issue may feel a disturbance in our work flow.. hence the first post from drybonz:

I'm at work so can't check, but I think my Explorer (as well as VLC and Chrome, maybe some other things) seems to remember its position fairly well. However, if I open the partition manager, or the start menu properties, they are always right off in a corner of the screen at a tiny size, no matter where I moved them or sized them the last time.

    Irritating.

it is most noticeable when you open the window/program, close it -by using the x- with your mouse and repeat this.. you will notice that the window wanders slightly to the right and down a bit.

I use a program called Windows Manager. Works fine.
    Link to Windows Manager?

BTW I do see the way Windows is responding but it just doesn't bother me. I'll try harder.

are you using win 10 mystere? have you tried this yourself? I don't know how the opening sequence is scripted. I realize that the old_position must be in that sequence somewhere. but it's not: 'reopen the window and the new_location=old_location' something more like: 'reopen the window and it's new_location=old_location + cascaded and offset by factor n.'

so, yes. your way is a better way of saying: why is it that win 10 windows explorer deliberately adjusts itself to be "cascaded" off of it's old location when reopened?

    better mystere?
I know it may seem nit picky, but it's an important distinction. If it didn't remember it's position it would always open in the default position regardless of where it was when you closed it. The fact that it remembers it's position, then seems to deliberately adjust means that it always opens in a different place, based on where the window was when you closed it.
