I've never had an issue with IE not opening a first window in the same location the last window was closed like this - unless you're talking about when you open multiple windows and they "cascade open." I'm using IE now instead of Edge so the window opens in the same place.

I normally have several application windows open at once so I can refer to them at the same time I type in the currently selected application. So it's great to be able to open 5 or 6 applications and have the Windows open up where I left them so I can see them all at the same time. It's a pain to have to resize and/or reposition windows every time I open them. To the folks who offer the solution to just maximize all windows, I guess they're lucky. But going back in time where we really only had the ability to run one application at a time is not the best option for me. And it would slow me down considerably to have to constantly alt+tab through applications I am actively using together.

Hooray! I'd almost forgotten how much this was irritating me, but they've fixed it and now my windows open in the same place and at the same size as I left them!

How about a small (non maximized) Edge window? As I reported above that window is still not opening in the same place if you open a single window, close it, then start Edge again. Is it working properly for you?

Edge doesn't have a menu in the upper left and so doesn't have the close option there that ensures that it remembers its last location. In the past closing with the red X in the upper right did not preserve a new location but the "close" selection in the drop-down menu in the upper left did. That is what Edge needs to remember last position. Windows with the menu remember. Windows without do not.

While I suppose you could be correct about the "close option" under the "file" menu correlates somehow to the window being able to remember its location, I cannot concur with the summation in the quote I included above. While this could have been true in the past, I'm currently using a non-maximized IE window and close it exclusively with the red x. A new window always shows up in the same location the last window was closed in. It has been this way for me at least since Win98 SP1, though I can't remember for sure for Win95.

Windows 10 home 64bit with the latest updates here, and File explorer still shifts across my desktop after closing (with the menu) and opening.

A bug is when the program doesn't do what it was designed to do. A program that doesn't do what YOU want it to do is just unfortunate, for you.

We don't know if Microsoft designed it to do this. We do know that previous versions did not, but that doesn't mean the current behavior isn't what is intended.

You may be right. It may be a bug. Or it might not. It's been reported for a very long time, and still hasn't been fixed.

Regardless, as I said, it appears to be doing this intentionally. Explorer *DOES* save its location. Otherwise, it wouldn't remember the last location in which to offset it from. What it's doing is loading the location it was last saving in, and then deliberately bumping it's location down and to the right of that previously saved location.

This is not something that you can just plug a registry value in. It appears to be programmed explicitly to do this.

This is either a bug or an anti-feature -- either way all that matters is that people say it sucks, which it does. It should be fixed.

I'm still in the process of sifting through this thread to see if a patched was ever made but already by page 2 your attitude is atrocious for apparently being a "VIP member" of this forum. Don't just stick up for bad parts of the product out of preference. You're just antagonizing problems with that attitude and making the dislike of win10 worse.

anyway some versions of windows had this feature as a toggle whether it is an oversight, intentional or a bug no one really cares. they just need to fix it.

I get that it's not perfect and it would be best if MS fixed this, but ShellFolderFix works for me for the majority of uses I need it too on Windows 10, and despite it warning that it does not support Chrome it is in fact working and remembering my Chrome last window position. So for me it's all thumbs up. Nick
