I was wondering...if i do an upgrade from a licensed windows 7 on my laptop (using the upgrade tool on the website)...will a new product key for the licensed 10 install be generated that i can copy down? If so, where would you locate it? (after your are on 10)....

I would want to create an iso which in the future i could use to do a clean install if needed but i want to make sure that when i would use the iso, i'd keep my licensed copy...even if say, i had to replace the hard drive for some reason...I am talking about re-installing on the same computer, of course...

    Thanks...
You will not receive a new product key, the version you upgrade to is just that, an upgrade version, not a licensed/retail version.
You will, however, be able to clean install, after the upgrade by running the upgrade tool again to obtain the iso; then any subsequent clean installs, on that machine only, with that hardware, will be activated automatically.

Thanks for the clarification...that sounds fine...just a few follow ups:

    1) Do you need to make sure you were properly activated on the upgrade before making the iso?
    2) And where do you locate the info in 10 that you were activated?
    3) And when you run the ISO, and it asks for product key, do you just skip it?
    4) Lastly, i was curious as to whether the iso includes any additional options aside from doing a clean install...

No, you can make it as soon as you receive all the files including install.esd because of 2.
    2) And where do you locate the info in 10 that you were activated?
    Activation is held at MS.
    3) And when you run the ISO, and it asks for product key, do you just skip it?
    Yes

Not sure what you mean but it has all the usual options to partition and format disk.

Thank you Edwin and Count Mike, you two have really clarified it for me
I am about to do it on my laptop and wanted to know all the ins and outs, as it were...I know you can re-install without an iso of course, but always like the idea of having a dvd disc as a back up method of installation...

By the way, i know with an upgrade, all the original stuff is retained (which would include toshiba's factory stuff that originally came with "7")....If you do a "refresh" and it re-installs "10"...does it still keep the original toshiba installed stuff as well?

And if you do a clean install, that would mean it would just be a pure windows install and not have any of the toshiba stuff the computer originally came with?

I was trying to decide whether it would be best to have a pure windows install as opposed to keeping the original toshiba stuff in the mix...:)

If you install and partition and format disk during installation, it will wipe everything out including Toshiba stuff. Clean install is called like that because it cleans up all the previous programs etc., nothing of old stuff is left on system drive/ partition. If you have personal files on that partition, make sure you have them all backed up and tucked safely away. Installation files for your favorite programs too because nothing will be left.

When the Windows 10 Upgrade runs:
Will it delete ALL my existing Windows 7 Home system code?
    If yes, which directories?
If not, then it'd be possible to boot 7, How?
I'm sure I have enough free space (>326GB) BUT - how much additional space will Windows 10 take up?

I currently am using a 2nd HD (for backups). Could I direct the Win 10 install to use it? (leaving the Win 7 system HD alone)

I've had this desktop for 5 years and have no idea where or what my WIN 7 KEY is? Will I need it?

Enquiring minds get headaches searching for answers...

Hi there. Welcome to Windows 10 Forums.

It won't completely remove all the code. It holds it elsewhere in case you want to roll back to 7.

The C: drive is where your OS lies.

You must use 7 to install free upgrade with. However you can buy a license to install on another partition and dual boot if you desire.

You won't need your keys, for it will read them during installation.

Please look on your Taskbar for the reserve icon.

Please follow this tutorial: Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums

Please don't hesitate to ask more questions if need be.

    Thanks! ..
From what I've read and your reply, that the old existing code is saved - then this "Upgrade" is similar to all previous upgrades (I.E. from 8 to 8.1, & earlier ones) or the regular monthly patches. It will use the existing update facility?! That sounds like the right way to make all this work! -- But I'm sure that will leave behind unused/unneeded code that can later be deleted for space recovery.

I assume then that the 3GB upgrade is a complete package - and by saving my existing Win 7, will allow 7 to be restored by 'backing out the 10 upgrade'. Users will need at least 6GB of free space to install (I assume the 10 upgrade/update doesn't disappear on it's own after unpacking itself). Will the 10 Upgrade be downloading more from MS?

If my assumptions are good, then it should have been stated by MS to make it easy to understand! (sigh)

I haven't found reports of anyone finding existing applications or utilities not working with Win 10. One of my favorite apps has already replied to me [paraphrased] "..the 10 internals are the same as 7 and will work without updates.." Have you (or anyone) seen any 'gotchas'? Office? Photoshop? etc

    Thanks again,
    Bob K.
