You could try enabling folder compression for various files you have (not windows directory) to gain a couple more gigs.
Heh, never been a fan of doing that. Better moving my User folder and save ~11.6GB.
Worse come to worse, I'll uninstall my Adobe softwares.

So, you guys said 16GB to install right?

Also, I didn't get an answer for this: Upon updating, I won't forced into an online account right?

I have a laptop that has windows 7 (licensed copy of course..lol) If i do the upgrade within the windows insider program (which i am registered for under one of my outlook accounts) will the information be retained in the upgrade that i came from a licensed copy, and then on the 29th will i automatically get upgraded to the final release (and have a legit copy). I would not want to keep it in the insiders program...And my windows 7 install has an independent user id and password, not the outlook accounts..

And if i can do it, once i do the upgrade, is there a way to check to see if my legit copy was carried over into the "10" upgrade install?

Showkey might show what you want it show but I am not sure it will show what you want it to show. :)

On the other issue it should work but I am not sure if you can even upgrade from windows 7 or 8.1 to build 10240 maybe someone else can verify this.

Oh, i thought you could upgrade even now (just can't get the "clean install" iso anymore)...hopefully, someone else can verify...but it would be important for me to know that i can upgrade into the final "legit" version after an upgrade in the insiders program....

PS: noticed you run Xubuntu also...also a fellow linux user...who runs ubuntu w/unity :)

That Xubuntu didn't work at first until a newer version came out, hardware issue. I used Lubuntu LTS with xfce4 desktop installed. I first started out with Ubuntu. I tried a lot of Linux distros tell I found the right one, not just Ubuntu flavors. Zorin wouldn't install on my system at all. Even though I would of liked to tried it.

    Now back to windows 10.
You can upgrade from either windows 7 to 8.1 to windows 10 preview, then upgrade windows 10 release, leave the insider program that windows 10 release will remain activated. The question I don't is will the insider program let you use windows update from 7 or 8.1 to upgrade to 10240 right now and activate. That I do not know the answer to.

Hi there. It may be possible to upgrade from previous OS. Not sure. If so, you must join Insiders first: Home page - Windows Insider Program

You must have a MS account to do so.

You may want to wait until they do release ISOs again, but then it may be to late. Did you at least reserve a copy if you want to upgrade?

    Edit:

Windows 10 Build 10240 for PC is now available

    That post and the next.

I'm confused about multi-booting. Currently I have a rig with Vista on one drive, W7 on another, and yet another with W7 and Zorin. I have reserved W10 for both instances of W7. I started with Vista, which came with the computer. I bought an upgrade DVD of W7 when it came out. What I'm getting in the various discussions, is that if I upgrade one of the W7 drives to W10, I can't leave W7 on the other drive. I can't run W7 and W10 simultaneously. Is that correct? I would need to upgrade both W7 drives? I'm assuming poor old Vista is so outdated that nobody cares what I do with it.

I had similar with buying this Acer, which came with Vista. I too bought the 7 upgrade then went on to buying an 8.

How did you get the 7s? The fresh-install workaround with one?

What you have been told is that you cannot use the Windows 7 key on another partition if you use it to upgrade to 10. As long as you have a legal key you can have anything on your partitioned drive

Microsoft are not offering free licenses out of thin air.
They are extending the previous (7 and 8) licenses through the upgrade offer.

If you had 7 as an upgrade to Vista, and you still use that preinstalled Vista, and the 7 upgrade on the same or another machine, or both(!) then it is a violation of the EULA upgrade terms.

If you have bought two full 7 licenses and have used one to upgrade, or rather to replace, an older OS, and the other to run as a dualboot with Vista, that is legitimate.

Microsoft cares about all of its progeny. However, the older, and less profitable they get, the less Microsoft loves them, and indeed, like the ruling Roman dynasties, the older heirs often get murdered to make way for younger contenders.
