I have seen Newegg advertise DVDs with just the media, but without product key. They run in the range of $10.00 to $15.00, I think. Also, there will be ISOs to download, I'm sure.

You can expect both to be available, since Microsoft has said we can reinstall as many times as we want to.

If Microsoft did something like that with windows 10 Microsoft could get in trouble with some of are laws in the U.S. We have what is called bait & switch law. Each state also has contract laws. I know Microsoft would never intentionally break a law.

well, i put in my 2 € here, which will not be worht much if Greece stays in the EU.....

We can hardly expect that M.S. will give away Windows 10 and or Office 2016 for free for what reason ever.

But if they do, we will be paying for it in another way.

Maybe they want to make money like Apple does.....they try to squize out every penny you have also...

So my final thought, we will be paying for Windows 10 on a yearly basis, so you will pay FOREVER.

What Jeff has said here would not constitute "bait and switch" even if Microsoft were to change Windows 10 to subscription. There is something called a "Grandfather Clause" that would allow everyone who already had Windows 10 to retain their status quo. And, since Microsoft has already advertised (to us in blogs) Windows 10 as a free upgrade . . . no bait and switch that I can see.

I think when you say that Microsoft could get in trouble with some of our laws in the US, you need to cite your source. If you cannot produce a source, you need to be careful when saying that something is or is not lawful. Just because you put a "disclaimer" in doesn't mean you aren't liable to a lawsuit yourself.

There isn't a "bait and switch law" per se that I can find; here's what Wikipedia has to say:

In the United States, courts have held that the purveyor using a bait-and-switch operation may be subject to a lawsuit by customers for false advertising, and can be sued for trademark infringement by competing manufacturers, retailers, and others who profit from the sale of the product used as bait. However, no cause of action will exist if the purveyor is capable of actually selling the goods advertised, but aggressively pushes a competing product.

Believe me, Microsoft has its collective butt covered by its legal department.

The free upgrade only last a year after that you got to pay for it. Meaning after a year you would have to buy a dvd disk or iso image to upgrade to windows 10 from 7 or 8.1

As far as the upgrades afterwords, I don't really know how they would do that. As long as you have image backup or restore cd you can go back to your previous operating system.

You're not alone in thinking that, and if it were to happen, that would be kind of OK, but now that Microsoft has all but said Windows 10 is the last one, I'm not so sure they can backtrack on this.

Microsoft has already said "for the supported life of your device" so how can they charge us after a year's time? Not gonna happen!

The only way I see Microsoft charging us again for Windows 10 is if our present systems all go belly up and we have to either buy a new system with Windows 10 on it or build one and buy Windows 10 for it.

Microsoft has just gone too far with the free upgrade to back down now.

I know that. Those that got the upgrade for free will still be able to install free even after free upgrade expires.

I thought I was clear on my post to winuser. Let say someone doesn't do the free upgrade till August 1st, 2016. He/she will have to pay one time to upgrade to 10 from windows 7 or 8.1 unless Microsoft extends the free upgrade offer. That what I meant on my first post.
