windows 8.1 to windows 10

    windows 8.1 to windows 10


    I have a new Windows 8.1 all in one desktop-Lenovo, and with Windows 10 coming out next month-do you think that I would need to back up my computer completely before hand-windows 8.1 system along with my files, etc..-just in case so I have the before intact and in case there is somehow a major problem with the 10? Hopefully not-but better to be prepared. What discs and type are used for OS backup and how many of them are used?
    I would be interested in any advice, and comments on this.

    Good Idea


    Creating a backup HDD/SSD image would be a good idea.
    Two backup images on separate drives would be even better.

    A lot of members (including myself) use Macrium Reflect Free Edition to create backup HDD/SSD images.

    Without seeing your setup it is hard to state how much external HDD space you would require.
    Music, pictures and videos generally don't compress much (if at all).
    OS files and documents (txt, doc, etc.) compress more.

    Here is a picture of my partitions and the backup image sizes (using Macrium's default settings):

    Note
    Even though it doesn't look like it, the Pictures partition backup image is actually smaller than the HDD partition size.

    That sounds like you are thinking about backing up to DVDs of some type.

    It's doable, but not the best idea---more prone to problems or outright failures.

    Use a hard disk of some type.

    W8.1 includes a full disk imaging utility. Using this will allow you to create an image of your PC as it stands at the moment you make the backup.

    Ideally the image should be made on a separate drive (such as a plug in USB type of sufficient capacity).
