For those of us who work with graphics and video editing the current status quo isn't acceptable. At the same time a good test would be to try to boot from Ubuntu or another live cd Linux os to see what the results are.
A live DVD of Linux is not going to do anything, because it is a testing platform. In order to get the proper graphics output from Linux, you would have to install it, install the proper drivers for a computer with a GPU card that can handle the stuff that you want to do on it. You will not find that on lower end laptops or desktops.

Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of testing this properly with an Ubuntu install. The laptop has only recently been bought, is still under warranty and no modifications are allowed, but I get your point.

It depends, some users report great success some don't few people are afraid that it may be malware (IMHO it isn't but always think and take care) and do it manually. Anyhow it works if scaling was good in windows 7 and 8 for you because it forces Windows 10 to use older scaling not new that came with windows 10.
I am always afraid of malware and registry edits. I scanned the app and no sign of a virus. Also it claims not to alter the registry:

Why this is a small software program, and not some 'Registry Tweak' is because when you manually adjust the DPI settings at your 'Windows Registry'. Windows will reset your dpi settings every 2 reboots. Which means you would have to adjust the registry again (Microsoft forces you almost to use its new DPI scaling method).
I am still in the early moments of testing it and will get someone else to look at it as well.

Also this is from their webpage:

Then you can use this fix until Microsoft has addressed this issue.
Time for the manufacturers and Microsoft to get together and sort this out so that a factory set laptop arrives to the customer with perfect graphics. When I bought a Toshiba laptop with Windows 98SE the graphics quality was perfect and that was a long time ago so why now almost 20 years later have we arrived at this nonsense.

Word of warning!!! While I installed XPExplorer I can't seem to uninstall it. It is not in Programs and Features. It is in a file at C:\Program Files (x86)\XPE Windows 10 DPI Fix with the names of:

    MSVBVM60.DLL (app extension)
    xpe_dpi_settings (setup info)
    XPEWindows10_DPI (app)
    XPEWindows10_DPI_FIX (app)

This is while it is running.

Here are some screenshots (attached).XPExplorer Extra Info.pdf

I scanned it with Kaspersky and it did not find any viruses.

I am looking into this but have no clear route of uninstallation at the moment (everything that is installed should uninstall easily!). If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
