How do I rename mixed JPG and MOV files into one numerical sequence
I have several folders of mixed photos and videos. Currently they’re manually sorted as I want them, in the order of their creation regardless of filetype (IMG or MOV). If I sort them temporarily on another column (e.g. Comments or Tags) then I have no way of returning to the current sort because IMG and MOV files don’t share a common creation date metadata field, and some files have no date metadata at all. I want to batch rename them so that the current sorting can be recovered by sorting on name. Unfortunately, when I do a batch rename in File Explorer it renames the files sequentially within each filetype, for example a very small selection of my current files might look like this (the numbers in square brackets aren’t part of the name, they’re to show how the order changes):
IMG_6345.JPG [1]
IMG_6347.JPG [2]
IMG_4213.MOV [3]
IMG_4004.MOV [4]
IMG_6221.JPG [5]
I selected those five files, right clicked the top one, selected Rename and typed “2018-08-07 iPhone” expecting them to be renamed as follows, retaining their existing positions in the list:
2018-08-07 iPhone (1).JPG [1]
2018-08-07 iPhone (2).JPG [2]
2018-08-07 iPhone (3).MOV [3]
2018-08-07 iPhone (4).MOV [4]
2018-08-07 iPhone (5).JPG [5]
But the files were renamed and numbered by type, so what I got back was:
2018-08-07 iPhone (1).JPG [1]
2018-08-07 iPhone (2).JPG [2]
2018-08-07 iPhone (3).JPG [5]
2018-08-07 iPhone (1).MOV [3]
2018-08-07 iPhone (2).MOV [4]
When I then sorted by Name I got:
2018-08-07 iPhone (1).JPG [1]
2018-08-07 iPhone (1).MOV [3]
2018-08-07 iPhone (2).JPG [2]
2018-08-07 iPhone (2).MOV [4]
2018-08-07 iPhone (3).JPG [5]
Is there any way to rename the files sequentially without the file extension modifying the process?
