Issues with coping or moving some files

    Hi Everyone,

    I have a odd issue that I can't find a answer to.

I have some (not all) video files (a few different formats) from another computer (pc1)
I am trying to copy them to my win10 pc.(pc2). It 2 disks (c and d drive).

    Here is where the issue starts;
I can watch the video (on both pcs)so I don't think there is anything wrong with it.
I can copy the file to USB or any other pc from pc1.
I can copy the to the c drive on pc2.

I can't however copy the file to anywhere on drive d on pc2. When I try the copy just stops (transfer rate goes to 0 and stays there) in the same place each time. Different files stop in different places. Once it stops, I can't cancel the copy and I need to restart the computer. No error messages are displayed.
The same thing happens irrelevant of transfer type. It can be network or c to d drive copy.

I don't have any 3rd party antivirus installed. In fact, there is really not much installed on this pc.

Can anyone think of anything I can try?

    Thanks

The problem may not be in the files, it may be corruption or bad blocks on the pc2's D: drive that you are trying to copy to. I'd check D: for errors before trying anything else.

You may also see drive errors listed in pc2's Event Log.

Is the D: drive of PC2 formatted to NTFS? Make sure of that as well.

It could also be where you are trying to store the files on PC2/Drive D:. The root of the HDD, C: or D:, can contain only a certain number of files, in the 'old' DOS days it was 512 files but with the advent of Windows 95 and its LFN/Long File Names that number may be about half. Putting the files in a Folder overcomes that limit. The mention of NTFS formatting of the HDD is important as that allows having single files of 4GB in size where FAT32 does not. On some computers there are small partitions on the HDD and usually don't have a drive letter assigned in which case that wouldn't be an issue.

True, but I don't think that's the problem here. The OP can start copying the files, only to hang part way through - a restart being the only way out. Also, the files have already been copied to a USB (usually formatted with Fat32). Trying to copy a file larger than 4GB to a Fat32 partition wouldn't start, but give an error message....

Seems more likely that the copy hits an error on the D: drive (with multiple retries?) that causes the hang.

    Thanks guys.

Disk is ntfs and files are only about 100mb.
Event log checked, no errors pointing to any issues.
Bad blocks - maybe. Odd thing is I can copy other files fine. Agree the blocks selected may be different, but when I try one of the "bad" files, it will fail in the same spot even after other files have copied. (assuming different blocks have been selected).

Chkdsk is something I have not tired yet - doing it now.
