    File owner changes

I backup my files to a USB on another PC and the owner changes to a long string (S-1-5-21-2070691468-2192114673-407588093-1001) - what's going on???

How are you performing the backup?

If the backup includes the owner information and not just the data, the the remote system will display the Security ID (SID for short) because it does not have the name associated with that SID locally. The SID would only translate to a valid user name on the system from which the files originated.

    I use xcopy for backup.

It has cause issues when trying to copy a file back because it maintains the SID rather than the owner of the file, but I made sure "Inherit" is "Enabled" and it seems to be working.
