    ..except
but it won't install on the new computer because I don't have a product key for the laptop. (I bought the laptop from Amazon.
However, were the OP to reinstall '8, it should be in the BIOS..

restore to factory settings? Usually some set of keys will at least get you back to Win 8 or 8.1 from the factory build, unless you have removed that partition. You may have to contact Dell and get the restore disks.

If she does that she will wipe out ALL existing DATA ..... as a last resort yes but trying to save the data is likely preferred.

On some laptops if it has a battery compartment , it is sometimes in there .....many newer laptops have built batteries though.

On a dead system most of those won't help but Kyhi's Boot Disk includes ShowKey so you could use that....

I thought , like Dalchina , you could skip Activation though ?

Warning....If you reinstall Win8 over the top , you will lose your Data I believe.....

The busted pc does not have a DVD drive. In fact, I had to go buy a flash drive, so there's another $20 or so Microsoft owes me. I followed your instructions, and am now downloading Windows 8.1 to the flash drive. Hopefully, I can use that to restore the busted laptop. Thanks for the tip on settings. I hope I can get to it to change it.
stop bad mouthing windows when you trying to get help fixing it ,it turns some of use from offering help, and it quite well could have been a Dell issue ,maybe they didn't update a drive r for a dell device in the laptop ... just saying ..
might I suggest removing the battery ,holding down the power button for about a minute ,then reconnect power and boot the laptop ,,, the fact it cant fine the usb device could be a bios issue with it not being able to or set to boot to a usb device .

You were right. I didn't do the Rufus thing correctly the first time. Unfortunately, I still can't complete the process. I believe the old laptop I am using is just not up to the job. I am now giving up for good. But I want to thank you for all your help. You've been awesome!

Couldn't make the Win10 USB Drive with Rufus, using my old computer. The Win10 download failed (repeatedly). I have gotten such great advice from you and others on this forum. Wish I could have got it done.

Perhaps the Wifi isn't so good on the old Laptop in Win7 ? , you could try again with an Ethernet cable with the Laptop connected to the Router Port directly if you have one.... assuming old laptop has an ethernet port? (looks like a FAT phone plug ...RJ45 vs RJ12)

Boy, you are a glutton for this stuff! Me, not so much. I'm going to watch the presidential debate on NBC, and try not to think about how much more aggravation and money it's going to cost me to get my laptop fixed. And even then I have to live in fear of the next Windows 10 update!
