Anniversary Update - Clean Install. Start menu anomaly

    Hi all,

Wondering if anyone else has experienced an icon display issue on their start menu with the 1607 update?

I have just clean installed (and fully updated) the 1607 Anniversary Update on 2 PC's and both are experiencing an identical issue with their start menu. The problem whilst seemingly minor is especially annoying given that I have performed the updates for some friends and it is a matter of pride to me that I hand over any such systems in a perfect state.

The Start Menu program list (A - Z list) as well as the "most used" and "recently added" lists contain icon tiles for the installed programs. On both systems around 25% of these tiles display a generic "blank page" image rather than the icon image associated with that program. That said the tile in question opens it's associated program and it's text label also displays correctly.......as I said earlier an annoying niggle!

By now you are all thinking ah its a icon cache failure just rebuild the icon cache!! I have of course rebuilt the icon cache following the instructions contained in option 2 of the tutorial here www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5645-icon-cache-rebuild-windows-10-a.html as well as deleting the C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\IconCache.db file neither of which corrects the issue.

Additionally, I have manually, refreshed several of the icons (right click button tile > more > open file location) by changing and then reverting the .ico file through properties. This makes the image display correctly but only until the pc is restarted?

There is a seemingly random pattern to the shortcut locations concerned with many of those shortcuts which reflect the icon image in the tile button appearing in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder whilst others reflect the user profile (C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs) or one of the sub folders associated with the program(s) in question.

The affected icon tiles include several of the Office 2016 suite (e.g. Word, Access, PowerPoint etc.) the Adobe Suite (e.g. Photoshop, LightRoom, Dreamweaver etc.) as well as various standalone programs such as LogMeIn and some of the Windows Accessories.

Has anyone any suggestions on how to remedy the issue?

Hi, some ideas - you may have come across these already... fortunately this hasn't happened to me
(Yes, it says tiles, but appears to be talking about the icons)
Windows 10: How to fix blank tiles on Start Menu

    Stardock products:
Windows 10 - Blank start menu icons - Super User

How does it look if you create a new user for test purposes?

P.S. I don't use Win 10's start menu - I use Classic Shell (free) to avoid all the issues and actually have a properly expressed start menu that I don't have to fight with. Eg. in Win 10's version of my Start Menu I see
    Help
    Help
    Help
    Help
    ...

    - all shortcuts from individual subfolders for different programs, extracted and listed alphabetically. Some help that is.

    Hi dalchina,

Thanks for your reply.......should have added that I had tried the international business times solution as like you I felt it referred to icons rather than tiles, unfortunately it did not resolve.

Another potential solution which I should also perhaps have mentioned in my initial post and tried without success was the deletion of the icon handler registry key from Classes Root registry. As it did not resolve the issue upon restart I replaced the original entry.

Interestingly, the second (super-user) link (which I hadn't seen btw) perfectly illustrates the issue I am experiencing with around 25% of the menu icons. Unlike the original poster on that site my systems were both clean installed with Windows 10 Pro Anniversary (1607) edition so no overinstall issues to consider........

Still trying to isolate the problem......

Blank tiles is an issue with windows anniversary update and it has been rectified in the latest update. Similar thing happened with me as well and nothing worked. Finally, I reinstalled the OS and the prob solved.

PS: This problem is most likely to trigger if you install the OS when your computer is running on battery.

    Hi Craige,

Thanks for the heads up on that.......just to clarify, the blank tiles to which you refer are those (small ones) from the Start Button menus (e.g. A - Z Program list) and not the 'Modern App' Tiles from the Start Area??

On the battery issue and for useful feedback both systems involved were totally mains powered throughout one being a Desktop System (Abit IP35 Pro) and the other a Laptop (Easynote LJ61)......

Incidentally can you advise the KB reference of the resolving update and I will check for installation....

    Many thanks again,

I was referring to tiles from the start menu, but I believe it should be applicable in your case as well.
The update that fixes this issue is the latest one KB3189866.

Have you tried running "sfc /scannow" from your command prompt admin to see what it reports and or repairs??
You also could run this command after you try SFC
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
If the sfc command does find errors, and repairs them, you need to reboot computer. Sometimes you may have to run sfc more than once, and reboot after it finishes.

Also have problems with the Start Menu. Is there a way of removing all apps glossary or listing?
    There is no switch anymore.

Just to check, try resetting the Office Tiles. Go to Control Panel/Programs. Find Office and click on the uninstall/change. When it comes up choose Repair. It not only should reset your tiles, but it will give you the color versions instead of the all blue ones.
