So if im understanding, you're saying that the problem is just a misunderstanding and mood point now? I was still confused as to what the OP's actual concern was exactly. I just took a look at the settings in attempt to help or curioscity. For email I always recall using an in-browser notification when I wanted one. (extension).

Do you have multiple folders set to sync

If so, try turning off for all except the inbox

Alternatively is possible, delete and re add the gmail account, it could be using large amounts of storage due to trying to sync everything

Seems MS removed that option and just made the Mail/Calendar always have access to your mail/calendar, didnt notice myself until i read this thread

I don't think "mail and calendar" toggle showed up under 'calendar' until I fooled around with some settings. I cant remember what I did but I was attempting to find a way to remove it again, no dice though. For now anyway.

Im currently under a restart schedule after downloading the update. Curious but is it inevitable or is there "going back" now? Im hesitant to the update due to the privacy concerns and stuff.

Sorry im hijacking this thread aint I.

Are those options all greyed out so you cant change them?

On mine the sync contacts and calendar is set to every 2 hours and greyed out, but i can change all the others

I can change anything for gmail (see post 6). Perhaps uninstall and re-install mail app?

    Oops
My mistake, that one is greyed out for me because i have Contact & Calendar sync turned off for gmail further down that page, so obviously cannot set the interval for it
